Please followup if you do find a solution. These are the kinds of problems I always run into whenever I try AFP over 1gb.

You can’t change hardware-RAID cards (CalDigit, ATTO, etc.) but with software RAID (Disk Utility) you can. A RAID created with Apple RAID card might work in software mode as well, not sure.

The source tapes are DVCProHD, so I think the suggestion was to capture firewire – which is the intelligent way to go IMO. Then lay off the final project to HDCAM SR which of course will require a card.

Bumping up DVCProHD footage to 4:4:4 is shoddy and unprofessional. There is no reason to do it unless you are trying to deceive someone. HDCam SR can also record 4:2:2 mode. I suggest you do that. Regardless of what the delivery requirements are, nobody has any use for a 4:4:4 tape if the footage isn’t 4:4:4 to begin with.

Google “Open-E DSS.” It will let you turn a PC server into fibre channel storage using Qlogic HBA cards. It costs $1000 but there is a free demo CD. I had the hardware already available, so I tested the demo months ago and it actually worked really well. However the $1000 price tag it makes more sense to just buy a real fibre channel storage device.
A free option is something called “Comstar” that is part of Opensolaris. Google it. Very, very complicated though. If you have zero budget, tons of time, and already have the hardware, then feel free to experiment.
EDIT: When I said “free option” I meant the software for the storage server is free. You’d still need to buy a license of MetaSAN for each client in order to have shared access to it.

It’s actually only write-speed that is slowed down. Read speed is the same as RAID-0. But I agree RAID-1 is a bad choice.

That’s pretty much all I intended this discussion to be about.

I’m totally baffled by how you could possible think that!?! I used MetaSAN for two years. I still have four licenses of version 2. It’s vastly more complicated than sharing storage over AFP. And you need a dedicated extra network for metadata. And then of course there’s configuring the FC switch. I’m not knocking it or calling it overly difficult. But to say it’s EASIER than AFP file sharing – that’s crazy.

I totally agree. But I’m not shopping to address an immediate need. Sorry if I wasn’t clear. 10gbe adapters suddenly became within the price range to where I would buy a setup like that now just for the luxury of it – if it worked well. It doesn’t, so I’m not.
