  • Final Cut not capturing more than a few minutes over AFP

    hey guys

this is mostly directed towards Bob, but anyone else can chime in.

in the Ethernet SAN i built a few weeks ago (https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/197/855502) we are having an issue during Final Cut captures to the SAN volume. if the clips are 2 minutes or so or less, they capture fine. if the clips are over that, Final Cut will capture the whole clip, creating a larger and larger Quicktime file, but then when the capture is done theres nothing left but an incomplete Quicktime file that Final Cut cannot reconnect to. this is with DVCPRO HD 1080i60. for example, a 5 minute clip will result in a 187MB unopenable Quicktime file that should be a bit over 4GB. we can watch the clip getting bigger and bigger (in Finder or Terminal), but as soon as capture finishes, the file reduces down to 187MB and Final Cut gives a Reconnect error. during capture, no drop frames or TC breaks are reported. also there are no dropped packets over the ethernet. if capturing to a local drive or direct attached drive, everything is fine. i think AFP is doing something to get in the way. or maybe Final Cut is having an issue seeing how big the space on the SAN is. i know with Capture Now, this can become an issue (btw, we are not doing Capture Now). Small Tree is helping me diagnose the problem, but i wanted to see if anyone else is having issues. this happens whether other people are editing on the SAN, or if only one system is on and capturing. the short term solution is to capture to Firewire drives, then copy the files to the SAN.

    thanks

Please followup if you do find a solution. These are the kinds of problems I always run into whenever I try AFP over 1gb.

Warren Eig had this problem, and it wound up being a corrupt project. My clients run AFP all day long, without issue, certainly doing files > 4Gig without issue. This is not an AFP limitation. I am discussing this with Eric off line.

When it’s resolved, I will post what happened.

the problem may be a bad network card on the server. i will let you know after i install the new card.
