Running FCP 6.0.4 on OS X 10.5.5 on a macbook pro.

We are working mostly in the XDCAM EX format – 35Mb/s so in general I want to keep the express slot open for the SxS cards – so looking for a FW800 external storage solution,

I need redundancy so am looking at 2 drive RAID 1 solution

Most of the storage will hold the BPAV folder archive – so looking for ease, stability, security over throughput.

The nice thing about the caldigit vr is the esata option. Though I won’t use this most of the time as I am dumping footage of the SxS cards through the express slot – it does leave a path to higher throughput should we have an out of the ordinary project that needs it.

Basically I am looking for the more secure – more stable – easy to rebuild option.

It looks to me like the Caldigit VR was just released – so that gives me pause – has anyone heard of an issues? Usually I like to wait a while after a release to see if there are any issues

I am looking to pull the trigger on purchasing one of these next week (the 3TB for the caldigit or the 1.5TB for the G-Safe (both 1.5Tb mirrored RAID 1) – anybody have a preference for one over the other?

    Best,

The VR is a great box. They have had several versions. They also have great customer support. I don’t think that you would be disappointed with the VR.

    Jason,

RAID 1 for video is really a waste of money and resources. RAID 1 (mirroring) decreases both storage space and throughput by approximately 50%, and there’s simply no reason to buy a premium raid-enabled product if you’re going to toss performance out of the window in favor of the level of automated backup that RAID 1 provides — that level of protection can be better and more economically achieved by backing-up to a simple $100 firewire drive. You’d be far better off using one of the two units you’re looking at in a RAID 0 configuration and backing-up manually to another drive. The performance you’ll get from RAID 0 is an enormous benefit during editing.

As far as the difference between the units themselves — I don’t think you can do better than the CalDigit VR. CalDigit builds great stuff primarily designed for the Mac and video editing. They’ve pumped a lot of resources into the VR to make it the most advanced multi-format raid on the market. And, they have great support for all their products.

    If y
    Agree with David.
I expect to buy soon a CalDigit.
My idea is format it as Raid 0.
For back-up I will use a couple of TBs that I have putting together 5 or 6 FW800 and eSATAS that I’m using now.

It’s actually only write-speed that is slowed down. Read speed is the same as RAID-0. But I agree RAID-1 is a bad choice.

Hey guys, we at CalDigit have developed a little comparison chart to show you all the features found in the CalDigit VR.

    Comparison chart

As far as RAID 1 and video, yes you are wasting a lot space and performance for that back up. However if you really need some mission critical at least you know you are safe. But that is the beauty of the CalDigit VR, you can use it in RAID 0 or RAID 1.

Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any additional questions.

You can use Shotput to offload your cards. We use it with P2, but there are many flavors. It will copy to up to 3 drives at once so you can have 2 or 3 simultaneous copies made. It will also verify the copies if you wish. https://www.imagineproducts.com/ShotPut.html
