Capturing DVD via HDMI & Black Magic Intensity
Posted by Osmin Camero on February 10, 2009 at 4:57 pmI have tried using Handbrake in the past to rip video off of DVDs however I am never satisfied with the output. The images always come out overly compressed and washed out. I figure if I connect our dvd player to the HDMI input on the Blackmagic Card, I should be able to capture with no loss in quality. I changed my capture preset to Blackmagic NTSC – Uncompressed and device control preset to Non-Controllable Device. Realistically I should be able to press play on the DVD player and Capture Now in Final Cut. I have tried this and the screen is just black. As if it is not receiving input. Am I doing this correctly or am I missing something?

February 10, 2009 at 5:03 pmDid you assign the Input on the card to the HDMI? On our Konas we have to assign which input to use.

This does do a MUCH better job than Handbrake.

February 10, 2009 at 5:31 pmWalter, I don’t see anywhere in Final Cut where to assign the input aside from the Capture Presets. The card itself does not include any type of software from my understanding either. As for Mpeg Stream clip, I will try that and see how it looks. In the mean time, it would be great to figure out the Blackmagic card. We have yet to actually use it capturing. It’s primary function is to provide an output to our Panny Plasma.

It’s not in FCP. With the Konas we have an AJA Control Panel where we assign the proper input. I have no idea how BMD stuff works because we don’t use it.

February 10, 2009 at 5:44 pmYou have to set the BM input – this is found in your system preferences. Set input HDMI with HDMI, digital or analog audio.

February 10, 2009 at 5:52 pmApparently according to Blackmagic their card will not capture from a regular DVD due to copywrite protection. I guess I will be looking into one of the other above options.

February 11, 2009 at 2:57 amThank you all for your responses. I did find the “Intensity” icon in my system preferences that allowed me to select my input and output. Both are set properly but like I stated above, the card will not capture copywrite protected DVDs. It shows a black image in the log and capture window. I ended up using MacTheRipper to get the data files onto the hard drive, then I used MPEG Streamer to extract the parts that I needed.

You can purchase a DVD player with an SDI output.
