I would take actual footage of a mushroom cloud explosion, and use a mixture of emitters and overlay them to simulate it best. You almost should roto the look as well. Not aware of a mushroom cloud plug in…

first off, the capabilities of “nucleo” are now standard in AE since CS3. CS4 has automated them
to make it easier to set the settings. If you are still using NUCLEO PRO from grid iron software, then
im not sure what the difference would be other than the batch rendering and ability to work while rendering. Read the manual or google the question as well. I know if your working with HD comps there are different settings than if your working on sd stuff.. Sorry couldnt be more specific…SuperNova

make sure your fonts are loaded properly. Open up illustrator and try typing the words you want to see if there is an issue..

send them to the Cow. Let them know how it helps you out and is a good ‘professional habit’ to get into. I NEVER charge for answers or advice. If you want to help great, but like I just said, send em to the cow. I have 18 yrs experience. I tend to be a LOT more generous with my time with younger artists, I like to give back that way. Someone with my experience, generally knows where to go to get answers, and
can be my competition, so while I wish them well, im not rushing to give them any advantages. Gotta feed my family first.SuperNova

why not use a series of masks to reveal the letters of the actual font. It would take a number of masks, but you would have custom control over the velocity. I know its not your ideal answer, but I cant quite figure out your question. Its just some hand work, but looks good when your done…

i dont know if it matters much. But I render my ‘master’ animations out in uncompressed animation codec. THEN i use Quicktime pro to export as H264. It allows me to adjust sharpness, hue, saturation etc. It does help me get the ‘look’ I like easier than exporting from AE. I admit to being frustrated with AE h264 output. Im sure its my user error, but its always a hassle. Maybe I am missing something, but I am very comfortable with QT Pro’s export.

use particle Illusion or manually do it yourself. YES, I said manually do it yourself. Im sorry, but im one of the old school guys here. If you cant get it right with a plug in, spend a few hours manually doing it.
Thats all it would take. A lot of people think they are saving days worth of time with these plugs.
Not true. I would manually create the balls, duplicate and fade at my own taste. You have all the control.SuperNova

just so I am clear, those were my FREELANCE estimates. NOT what a ‘Facility’ would charge for that same service….

$125hr for AE freelance work? I want your clients. I have 17 yrs experience both in the midwest and in LA. Be VERY careful trying to adjust your rate based on how large a client is. Do you want repeat business? Things can get sticky when you vary rates based on client size. AE artists are numerous.
If you have good 3d skills as well that will push you into a higher rate\bracket. Most clients in LA that I work with want my ‘day rate’ which is $700 but I am a generalist, 1 stop shop so to speak.
I offer incentives here and there, especially during this recession, but NEVER charge for rendering (during off hours) Only the biggest shops around tend to be able to include a render charge. Its all included
in your hourly rate.
…
You charge a rate that is based on HOW GOOD YOU ARE. NOT on how big the client you are working for is. (when a millionaire walks into mcdonalds, he pays the same price for fries as the high school kid. If Mcdonalds raised its price for the millionaire, he would not put up with it) You may get away with it, but it will eventually catch up with you.
……
Rates imho – do vary some based on region of the country — midwest AE — $300 day rate New York \ LA AE- $600 day rate — South AE $250 day rate Bigger cities tend to pay higher rates.A day rate is the “deal” rate. When projects go long or over estimate, then, in my experience, I charge more of a premium hourly rate that is pre arranged.
Were all different in our experiences…..
