Hi Thomas, very informative post.

I have a 2012 12 Core Mac Pro, 64GB RAM and doing a lot of work in AE using Trapcode and a little bit of C4D but After Affects CC is starting to struggle in some of my Trapcode-heavy comps.
I just wondered if the Nvidia Quadro K5000 is still your recommended choice in 2015?

Hi sorry, I didn’t reply sooner, when I said previewing I meant when doing a RAM preview.

I still haven’t upgraded my GPU yet but have been experiencing problems as I’ve been doing lots of work using Trapcode Particular and it’s starting to struggle. In this one comp it’s hopeless at previewing frames. When I do finally get a preview and attempt to move along the timeline it can take up to 3 minutes to preview that frame.

I’m desperate for a GPU upgrade now.

Any suggestions which one I should go for in my 2012 12 Core Mac Pro with Mini Display ports?
What’s the most powerful for under £1,000?
As I mentioned, Nvidia did recommend the Quadro K5000 which I’m not sure is the best one to spend my money on. Some suggestions would be really appreciated.

I didn’t need to bake them when I tried it, I think by checking the ‘Solids’ in the compositing tag took care of that for me and it just created a solid in my AE file with the key frames already applied. Thanks though.

Wow, it’s been a while since I first wrote this post, but I today I’m still having trouble with outputting shadows and alpha with Shadow Catcher.

What I want to achieve is:

Where everything is orange in this image I want to be Alpha. The spheres bob up and down with the plane hiding the underneath of the objects but i want the shadows on the plane.

But when I apply Shadow Catcher the the alpha channel of the material applied to the plane I can see through the plane but i don’t want to:

Anyone got any ideas?

I’ve been a big fan of this expression for some time now I’m just wondering if there’s a way that something can be added to it to make it scale back down to 0 after a set amount of time?

I’ve only been able to achieve this by attaching my objects to a null and then scaling the null down where I want the object to scale out. Any ideas?

7 years on from the original post and still no easy solution to make a tapered stroke line, very disappointing.
