Why do I get better playback on all my video clips when it is disable verse enable, even when I am using an interlaced format?
I have also noticed that on some of my clips, Vegas incorrectly reads it as progressive when it is interlaced (mediainfo confirms that). I have to set it properly in the clip properties, any idea why?Xavier (Scott) Francis

Make sure you are also disabling resample on ALL you video clips. This keeps timeline playback from bring as good as it can be. I almost always can keep things smooth now since I learned that, thanks again to good ole’ John R!!!

Another reasonable option may be to get a Macbook Pro and run bootcamp.
The laptops are a bit better from Mac. I have yet to get a laptop that is even REMOTELY close to a desktop for Vegas. Just the nature of the beast, you need a great processor, GPU and ram, which are all premiums when putting them into a laptop.
Alienware is a place to look as well, but again, it will cost you.Xavier (Scott) Francis

Any external storage would need to be via Firewire 800 and/or USB2. There are 4 internal slots for 3.5″ HDDs. They are NOT SATA 3 speed but SATA 2.
SATA 2 is still VERY fast however, if you want ESATA or SATA 3 you will need to get a PCI-e card for those as they are NOT part of the native Mac Pro.
Also, with the SATA slots are 3.5 if you want to use an SSD drive you will need a specific adapter that you can get at OWC.
I am unsure of how to setup an internal RAID for Mac OS so I am not sure how to do that, if you use an external raid, than you will just need to determine if you would need to get a PCIe card to match it’s interface (as I said above). I am not aware of ANY Thunderbolt PCIe cards bring manufactured (because of the speed), and the older Mac Pros don’t have Thunderbolt.I purchased a USB3 PCIe card and it is pretty fast, I use all 4 SATA slots, running both OSX and Windows on a partitioned SSD drive in slot 1, and 3 other drives that are for either Windows storage (formatted in NTFS) or exFAT if you want both OS’s to see the info.

Also, know that USB3 and Thunderbolt are not native to these Mac Pros. You will need a PCI-E card to have USB3.

If I may add, I also have a Mac Pro 2.6 ghz, 12 core, sorta on John recommendations.

I have had decent luck with it, I also installed a Radeon 7950 card that had the EFI updated so I can boot from either OS as it starts up. If you use an off the shelf “PC” card you would have to select it in OSX and reboot if you want to boot into Windows.
I also have a PC I built about 3 months after getting the Mac Pro, with a Devil’s Canyon 4790k chip and R9 290 GPU.
Both have SSD main drives and run Windows 7 Ultimate, both have 16 GB RAM.
I have come to the conclusion that the PC runs Vegas a bit better. Render times are comparable between the two systems and 4K edits a bit better on the PC. I would likely give this up to the GPU, I cannot update my GPU in the Mac Pro without adding a second power supply, so I am kinda stuck with the 7950 unless I do, as that is about the highest end GPU you can put in an older Mac Pro model without the second PSU.
I have a few more crashes of Vegas on the Mac Pro, when using MXF file formats than the PC, which was weird, but other than than, it works great!
I would say that Mac Pro’s have a LOT better components and I really wish I could see what would happen if I could get a better GPU in there. I just don’t currently have the ability to take the time to work on hacking and using a second GPU.
That is just my experience, yours may vary.

Depends on the codec of the 4K. My GH4 gives me about 2+hrs on a 128GB card. Vegas 13 works great editing it and there is just so many more pixels to work with for zooms and pans in post…

I run both, and worked in a nearly entire Mac environment for 4 years, I still prefer Windows 7 over ANY Mac OS. To me (and this is my opinion) Mac is clunky and counter intuitive in my view. The way they go about doing things just makes no sense to me. Sometimes 4 steps to do something that in Windows is a right click and drag.
I WILL say the OS and hardware LAST and have way less issues that PC’s no doubt, and my Mac Pro is a beast in regards to hardware.
Since I left that position and am all self employed again, even having 3 Mac’s in my possession, I will boot them in Windows and nearly NEVER open the Mac side unless I am using Pro Presenter or my Blackmagic ATEM Switcher control.I know each user is different, and maybe building my own PC’s since Windows 3.1 is part of the comfort, I don’t know. I will say, that we should all be versed in both platforms this day and age.

I have the 4790k chip running a Windows 7 Ultimate machine and it REALLY handles Vegas well. I have an AMD 290 GPU with 4GB ram and I can edit 4K (from a Panasonic GH4) pretty easily.
If price IS a concern, don’t hesitate to pull the trigger on this chip.
That being said, if you CAN afford the 6 core, do it, I just couldn’t afford one when I did.
I also have a 12 core Mac Pro like John, but have had a few issues with Vegas not running so smoothly and crashing VS my 4790K machine. Also, I can only put in a Radeon HD 7950 in it before needing a second power supply.Just my thoughts…

I found a little work around. In the future I can shoot in .MOV format and then combine them in Quicktime Pro. That will allow me to have the entire clip in Vegas and also manipulate outside of Vegas as well.
I still have not found anyway to join the files that are MP4 and keep the audio as well. This is a very annoying issue, but at least at this point I have a working fix moving forward.Again, if ANY of you have any other ideas, I would welcome them!!!
