    hi,
I appear to be unable to get a definitive answers to what seems to be 2 fairly simple questions! My questions are-
    1. “can I edit 4k clips on Vegas 12pro which retain the enhanced quality that the medium provides?”
    2. “can DVD architect work in 4k?”

[brian langtry] ” “can I edit 4k clips on Vegas 12pro which retain the enhanced quality that the medium provides?””

Yes, you can edit and deliver 4K with Vegas Pro 12.0.

No. DVD Architect supports SD and HD but not Ultra HD.

    hi john
thank you so much for the info. i did find an article on creative cow which was very useful. I did not realise that 4k files were so big – only 50 minutes film on a 128gb card? guess i’ll stick with HD and hope ultra HD mporphs into something which which is less hungry. Many thanks for your comments very grateful.

Yea, I don’t think people realize what they are getting into when they buy a 4K camera. It’s requires a lot of data and processing power to edit. Glad I could help.

I agree with John on the sheer size of 4K footage. But I have found the latest version of Vegas 13 does a great job with a descent computer and a good card like the R9 series. But the problem here is no one can view them on most computers unless they have a 4K video card and monitor. Not quite ready for prime time. Again the 4K footage plays back awesome on a 4K system. One more item is, if you use the 4K footage as your source file and render the final output to 1920 by 1080 the higher detail of the 4K source footage gives you a better render than a normal res file. {more detail}.

Depends on the codec of the 4K. My GH4 gives me about 2+hrs on a 128GB card. Vegas 13 works great editing it and there is just so many more pixels to work with for zooms and pans in post…

I concur with Xavier (Scott) Francis. My findings are the same and I doubt I will go back to HD acquisition. Capture 4k and render to HD works great.

I couldn’t agree more. The clip I am including was captured with a phantom 3 4K The clips were 4K and rendered to 1440 by 1080 with the wmv codec. The quality is outstanding as it is only 3 meg a sec. Yes it’s not perfect , but I feel for the size it looks great. I also rendered it as a mp4 at 1920 by 1080. That looks superb. Way too big for most folks on the net though.

If you want people using Mobile devices (which outnumber Desktop devices for web browsing today) or on Mac’s to watch your videos, you should encode them as MP4 and not the proprietary Windows Media format.

    [John Rofrano] “Mobile devices”

John Rofrano has a valid argument about transcoding to a win exclusive format. These days phones, tablets alone outnumber desktops and don’t alienate our OS (mac) brethren. Simple math, Apple has sold 700 million I Phones and 25 million Apple TV sets? By not transcoding to MP4 there is a loss of 725 million potential viewers.
