The whole issue for me comes down to future proofing your camera original. That way your material remains contemporary the longest. I have tons of camera work that can no longer go on a demo reel just because it was mastered in SD and HD, when now producers and directors want to see what your 4K footage is like. Which to me has always been stupid, since it will look just the other material just sharper.

I understand what you are saying, but 100 mb or 400 mb makes a big difference on who can see the files and bandwidth. A lot of folks out there are running XP machines or even Vista and they don’t like mp4 files. Here is the video as an mp4.

It all depends on who you think your audience is. If you would rather appeal to luddites and alienate an entire new generation of viewers, then keep publishing outdated, proprietary windows only technology. XP users can find a player that works with MP4 if they want to. Tablet and SmartPhone users cannot find viewers for old windows technology. So it’s a choice between people who are too lazy to view your videos, vs people can cannot under any circumstance, see your videos. Like I said, it all depends on who you think your viewing audience is.

It is a John Rofrano states and as I have eluded to. Filmmakers are not the only ones with the dilemma. Look at the plight of web designers who wish to reach the maximum viewers. In order to do so a site must be created for two types of OS on phones, two types of tablet OS, TV, desktops and all their various browsers. This is why standards like DVD and Blue Ray have been implemented, it is simply a means of communication between devices and for web video the standard at present it mp4.
Why VHS, DVD, Blue Ray and mp4 you ask, the answer is as simple as the world’s oldest profession which dictates formats from paper dimensions to video dimensions and delivery format.
