  • Photoshop. Create a black solid, punch holes in it, save with alpha. Drop clip underneath in the timeline, resize and position.

As Jeff said, I think its either MPEG streamclip/DV-DVD or DVD player into card route. Either way its not going to look great. You are going through multiple concantinations (new word I’ve been dying to use).

I haven’t used time remapping in FCP but jwedit is right with the speed change. Its a bit awkward but works. As far as subclips go; I hate them. Definetely subclip with as big of a handle as you would possibly need.

    Try MPEG streamclip.

The best advice I ever got was from a guy who after 45 years of editing; still found immense joy in filmaking. He told me first, spend time with the material (meaning watch and listen without judgment) Dont think oh this fits in this category that fits over there. Just listen, let it “flow over you”. Then find “moments” of truth/beauty/honesty and cut them into your timeline and flesh them out. Then figure out how to put these islands of truth/beauty/honesty into a cohesive story. His approach is not easy nor fast; but the results are well worth it.

Pick up a copy of “Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System” by Sean Cullen, and more. Its from Peachpit Press. I found it on Amazon. Tons of usefull info for getting the most out of a Mac and FCP in a pro environment.

That really illuminated areas I had not even thought of. Now I am thinking of all the “small” stuff I throw in for free that I should be charging for.

OT to this post. Do you think that you only become de/undervalued if you let yourself get that way. ie If I say “no problem” and then work for free the client then comes to expect more and more for free? Its a thin line between being taken advantage of and providing great customer service.

Thanks Tim, I check the CC job board (along with Mandy, CraigsList, editjobs.com,etc) daily. Most of the jobs offered seem to be “Looking for someone with all the latest gear, becoup experience, credits. No pay but its a great resume builder/oppurtunity”. So, I’m trying to find other oppurtunities. I’m currently in transition and would be willing to relocate to anywhere for the right oppurtunity; so I thought a “headhunter” would have a better handle on other markets.

Ahh, deliverables and dubs. Forgot that. I just include tape so I’m not liable for collecting taxes. Media expenses are negligible for me so far. As far as revisions, since I’m on a day rate they can revise till their hearts content. More revision mean more time, mean more expense. I’ve tried a set fee; but it always seems like I am taking it in the sorts if I do this.

That begs the question. Why is SD 720×486 then?
