doesn’t matter what your cutting with, pretty much all NLE’s suport HD these days. But SD is very much alive, especially in non-broadcast stuff. Most people don’t have a way to play hd, but everyone has a DVD player.

– mark in to out on the clip you want to move on the timeline.
– press alt + c to copy it to the source window
– press x to delete the clip from the timeline
– then insert it to it’s new place with the sync locks onthat will do what you want to do.

I do agree that Avid basic I/O is over priced and it would be good for them to open up to 3rd party hardware, As long as they still make their own hardware. I work on a Smyphony Nitris and love it.
My biggest complaint about FCP/aja/blackmagic is going to tape.
Too many times have I and other editors had issue’s getting out of fcp to tape. things out of sync, dropping frames, not inserting corectly etc etc. (and these are high end FCP suites, not i-macs with firewire drives)The reliablity of the Nitris I/O is worth the extra money. I work on a lot of stuff for the NY met opera, so these are 2-3 hour shows
and I never have any issues inserting onto the masters. 99% of the time I don’t even check the inserts afterwards, and they never get kicked back after QC.Scott Cumbo

As far as I know Avid doesn’t run on linux.
If you want to be able to take advantage of avid tech suport than i would get an avid qualified PC or mac.avid can be pickey about motherboards/chipsets.
do some research on the user forums at the avid website. over there you have a lot of people running unqualified pcs with sucess.Scott Cumbo

Just a video mixdown, it creates new media for the video. Consolidate is different (in avid terms)
you can do an audio mixdown also, but it’s not nessacery. i usally just copy my original sequence and cut in the new video (from the mixdown) keeping the original audio.

to do a video mixdown just select your in and out points, than go to
Special, than select video mixdown. It will create a new media file of your sequence thats 1 video layer.
dubplicate your original sequence and cut in the new video.just remember your original sequence stays the same, but the video mixdown is new media so you won’t be able to match back to the source media. So any revisions or anything like that you should go back to your original sequence

do a video mixdown of your sequence, than output a Quicktime referance movie. Than bring that referance movie into sorenson squeeze. encode it in sorenson to mpeg2, i think they have a DVD presets or something like that. then use Avid DVD or nero or something like that to burn your DVD.

yeah Avid doesn’t always have all the flavors of firewire deck/camera templates. Most of the time the “General dv device” works fine.
