Mask out different parts of the still image and re-arrange them in Z space. You can do this in After Effects, Smoke, Motion etc.

I find that this is kinda misleading as the clips just kind off hang there like layers.

September 15, 2012 at 8:47 am in reply to: It’s All Connected — Clip Relationships and The Magnetic Timeline ParadigmBut having said that, I do have issues with the way clip connections work. The fact that deleting the parent automatically deletes the child clips makes sense logically, but sucks during editing. I loathe all the manipulation that needs to take place to enable some very basic edit operations.
So I am interested in David’s approach.

September 15, 2012 at 8:04 am in reply to: It’s All Connected — Clip Relationships and The Magnetic Timeline ParadigmNow imagine a third edit option. For lack of better terms, let’s call it a “layer edit”. In this scenario, when the editor encounters a clip collision, they have an option to layer or nondestructively overlap the clips, rather than overwrite or insert them. I can think of several UI designs for achieving this.
My question would be how does this affect sound? Video is not a problem, but how do these layers function when the source clips being edited in have sound attached, and record area has sound attached as well?
I have to say that personally, after not having to patch tracks in FCPX I find it a drag to have to patch in FCP7 or Smoke on Mac. And I never found it a problem before, it was just part of the editing process.
Btw, I enjoyed your write-up on Absolute vs Relative time. I’m constantly humbled by the discussions that take place on the COW.

This is the quickest way so far.
Thanks Jeremy.

I was tempted to go back and cut this in 7, but then I remembered all the clicking I’d have to do to load the clips in to the Viewer.
Now that the iOS stuff is out, hopefully 10.6 rolls out soon. The Dual Viewers don’t even need to be ‘re-imagined’ or ‘revolutionary’. They just need to be 2-up to make me happy.

The offline is the Primary Storyline. I’m connecting the rushes to the offline in the appropriate places.
Didn’t think of using Crop, thanks!
Still going to be painful though. Anyway, I’m resigned to this session sucking so I’ve come to terms with that at-least.

August 11, 2012 at 4:40 pm in reply to: Best online training for Advanced techniques?Michael Wohl has some good ones on MacPro Video. I didn’t like Larry Jordans FCPX training, it’s fine for someone just starting out IMO but way too slimmed down if you actually cut for a living.
Ripple’s stuff is also better than Lynda and LJ, again IMO.

At the Bottom left of your screen you’ll see 2 icons. On which looks like a film roll and another that’s rectangular with lines in it. Click the rectangular icon to open up the Timeline Index.
Once it’s open, click on the Roles tab within it and check if your Audio Roles checkbox is unchecked.
