Yes that’s it. I have Blackmagic Design Desktop Video installed for my Blackmagic cameras. This is what installed the codec that allows Quicktime to read the video portion of the prores files on my pc installation. It’s a free software can be downloaded from

I’m sorry I don’t recall if the feature is available in the standard version. I must however adjust my statement from “save as hinted movie” to “save as a reference movie”. Hinted Movie is from Avid Media composer which allows the viewing of a timeline edit in an external media viewer without the need to encode. It’s useful for submitting an edit for review and sign off.

No and yes,
No you can not import MKV files into Vegas mostly because the MKV codec is a delivery format, meaning it is meant for viewing not editing. Then again in this age of Giant phone screens, which are smaller than a 1950 TV screen, I am certain that should the edit be viewed on such a device one would be hard pressed to discern a difference between the edited or original versions.
That said most high end NLE Vegas included do not support flv, mkv and soon webm will be on the list.
Now as to yes, You can install certain codec packs that Vegas will use as it’s default codec. But be advised unless configured by someone who knows exactly how to configure the instal, the chances of overriding the Sony supplied codec of know quality with a codec of questionable quality and origin is extremely high and will cause undesired results.A more favorable solution would be to transcode the mkv file into a Vegas friendly filetype.

I’m afraid I have to agree with Steve Rhoden on this. I ran away from Vista asap installing Win XP 64 bit version. As for Vegas, the awkward stage where transition from 32 bit to 64 bit was just that.. awkward. Vegas trying to straddle both operating systems, well nobody else did it any better. Except for Eyeon software. But then Vegas was a few hundred dollars and Fusion was a few Thousand dollars. Perhaps it is time to upgrade to a used machine?

I open it in quicktime then save it as a hinted movie wich Vegas can now ingest without transcoding or loss of quality. Works for me anyway.

Yes we were chatting, best to so that in private where I will be glad to answer your questions. If you want to pick my brain then this is a good time for I’m between projects. When I pick one up I am consumed by it, so getting my attention then might prove challenging.

Lets put it this way, Whatever FX the other have like lens flairs, light wrap, color correction and so on. All those were pioneered by a compositor like fusion (Win, Linux and soon Mac) or Nuke on a Mac. Lets not forget Flame or scratch. Mostly these compositors create or set the trends for which plugins are created and sold en mass to those who need a shortcut or plain don’t know how. There are free plug ins, free scripts and macros and once a thriving community supporting Fusion. And to answer the question, if you do not know how to create your own light wrap there are two tools that come with the free version of Fusion. Also included are background templates, lens flairs a state of the art color corrector. Mocha Tracking import, an internal tracker that is no slouch. Blurs, glows, roto tools and a real robust 3D systems complete with lighting and model import for fbx or most 3d model software. And yes 3d text. Camera projections and on and on. I’ve been using the program since 2010 and still only scratch the surface of it’s abilities. Looking at what other artists do with it is always astounding.
