Best Tool To Bring DVCProHD into Vegas

Norman, I’m lucky in that my employer has a site license for the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of tools.
I bring the DVCProHD file into Premiere and render it out as a QuickTime file which Vegas can then read.
You can also load it into Adobe Media Encoder and do the same thing.

To be honest Norman, it’s been a while since I had to do it but as I recall, there was very little degradation.

I open it in quicktime then save it as a hinted movie wich Vegas can now ingest without transcoding or loss of quality. Works for me anyway.

Russ, what do you mean by a hinted movie? DO you need to buy QuickTime Pro to be able to do this?

Yes, I too am wondering what “hinted movie” means.

Norman, I was going to comment that you purchased a capture card that is primarily designed for the Mac (even though it does work in a PC) and so it’s saving in a format that works great on a Mac but not so great on a PC. You might want to rethink your production pipeline and either buy a Mac or buy a card that captures in PC friendly formats. Having to transcode everything you capture is suboptimal for every day work.

I’m sorry I don’t recall if the feature is available in the standard version. I must however adjust my statement from “save as hinted movie” to “save as a reference movie”. Hinted Movie is from Avid Media composer which allows the viewing of a timeline edit in an external media viewer without the need to encode. It’s useful for submitting an edit for review and sign off.

I downloaded QuickTime basic, and the option to save as a specific file type was greyed out, so I loaded my Quicktime Pro unlock code (from before), and now it gives two options: “Save As a Self-Contained Movie” (97MB), and “Save as a Reference Movie” (9KB). So I assume “self contained” means it includes the media, and “reference” means it makes a simple link.

I saved as both file types, and they both drag onto the Vegas Pro 13 timeline–but I only get audio (and not video) both in Vegas, and in QuickTime, which is weird, because I get both in Premiere Pro CS6 (which I have not had time to learn, long story).

I called Apple, and they said it sounded like a missing video codec. I put in a call to AJA, and they were in a meeting, so I am waiting on a call back. I should probably call Sony (and see if they will help). I would like to know why I get video in CS6, but not in Quicktime, or in Vegas.

I’m guessing because CS6 also runs on a Mac and Vegas Pro does not. So Adobe had to add DVCPROHD support for their Mac version so their PC version has it too. As I said, you bought a card that is primarily design to work with a Mac.

You may need to purchase the Raylight Decoder which will allow you to import DVCPROHD into Vegas Pro.

I just got off the phone with AJA. They were very helpful and professional. Long story short, I can now capture in AJA Control Room, but still cannot capture in Vegas Pro 13. When I go to Preferences, then Device, I select the AJA Capture Card, and it says, “Device Not Available.” I both wrote and called Sony on this issue back in summer, and never did hear back.

In contrast, I can capture with the new AJA Control Room v10.3, and drag it onto the Vegas timeline. The audio is faint, but I can probably boost it.

To be fair, this same capture crashes the latest version of QuickTime (v7.7.6). AJA also said that FCPX also cannot capture natively, but must capture in Control Room, and import. However, I was impressed by both AJA and Apple Tech Support.
