If you’re shooting in 720P then you need a sustained transfer rate of about 15MB/sec. I know of a feature length documentary that recorded interviews this way.
How full is your drive? Is it a dual drive FW800 drive or just a single?
It wouldn’t hurt to buy a FW800 PCI card though.

You should at least have some success digitizing. While you might have problems sometimes, you should be able to digitize from MiniDV with your system.
What are the specs on the powerbook?
Can you capture to the internal drive (just a couple of minutes as a test)?

You should be able to do so by connecting the firewire from the camera to the computer and then using log and capture in FCP to digitize.
You’ll need to get you’re settings right though. What format are you shooting?

You might try installing everything except for Motion and Color. Those are the two graphics processor intensive programs.

You might just check to see if the position under the motion tab settings is set to a even number on the Y axis. FCP’s internal title tool acts funny if it isn’t.

I’d edit in DV Anamorphic until you’re ready to export, then change the settings to DV50, or 8-bit or 10-bit uncompressed.

I believe it just duplicates every fourth frame.
As far as the playback issue is concerned, they probably didn’t have their settings right. (They had to render the file in the timeline.) I would have just set the sequence up to play back the AIC without having to render it.

I often use Toast 8 which will allow my to span large files over multiple discs. It’s easy to use and can be restored on a PC or Mac.

Oh, you mean hold shift+apple+control+b+r+u+c+e+c+o+m+e+o+u+t ?
That always works for me in FCP6. (Yes, you do have to have two fingers on the “E” key because it is listed twice:)

You might try using Motion or maybe changing from a 8-bit codec like DV50 to a 10-bit codec like 10-bit uncompressed or ProRes.
Or you might need to blur the animation a little.
For me, I would just use After Effects, but I realize that you don’t have that.
