We do a lot of HD offline editing in DVCPROHD. It’s a great codec for editing. With the Kona 3 card, you might consider cross converting from 1080/24p to 720/24p when you capture it.
It still maintains a nice looking image while cutting the file sizes from about 13MB/sec for 1080/24p down to about 6MB/sec for 720/24p. But if you want to keep the 1080 image because you have enough storage, that would work just fine too.

You can do this, but you might end up rendering quite a bit. If your HD footage is in the HDV codec, you’ll have hours and hours of rendering and you’ll get quite frustrated. If you do have HDV footage, then I’d convert it to some other format for editing.
It would be worth noting that you’ll probably have a lot less rendering if you were using FCP6.

You might try downloading the latest flip4mac plugin from http://www.flip4mac.com. You just need the free plugin.

I don’t do a lot of audio sweetening, but I know that by using SoundTrack Pro, you can sample an audio noise and then filter it out. It might even be worth upgrading to FCS2 if you haven’t already because Apple made some great improvements to STP in it.

Not sure why it would change on a different system. Did you have to reconnect the files on the new system?

If you have After Effects, there are some stabilizing features in that.
There might be some plug-ins, but we just used Shake when we were using 5.1. FCP6 is a lot easier to use than Shake or even After Effects for stabilization.

I also have a 15″ and love it. It should really come down to what you’re editing and if it works for your workflow.
If I had a 17″ I wouldn’t carry it around it nearly as often.

Did you delete all of your old render files first through the render manager?
It sounds like you have some corrupt render files.

I’m not sure what else to say other than triple checking all of your settings on the deck and FCP.
Did you delete the files in User/Library/Preferences/FinalCutPro User Data/
