[Imagine Video] “(Btw, out of curiosity- did you both know QT can’t deal with 16×9 anamorphic?) “
QT can deal with anamorphic video. I have DVCPROHD files that playback widescreen, most of the time. DVCPRO resolution is 960×720 or 4×3, but QT usually knows this and plays it back at 1280×720 or 16×9. But then again, sometimes it doesn’t.
I don’t know why it does sometimes and doesn’t others, but I haven’t every really cared because it doesn’t change the fact that anamorphic video is still 4×3 and needs to be stretched before you deliver.

[Kevin Hedin] “but I just want to make sure that I can’t do that with 720p60”
I haven’t found a good way of doing it unless the tape has been flagged by a camera.
I wouldn’t use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown. I would use your Kona LH to do that. You set your in point to start on the A frame and digitize using a 23.98 setting instead of 29.97. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to adjust the frame offset in the device control preset until it works.
If I were you, I’d get a test tape from your transfer house and try it to make sure you like the workflow before you transfer the whole film that way. This will also make sure that your transfer house has their settings right.
Are you going to go back to film or finishing to a video/digital format?

[Barry Green] “32GB card will begin shipping “in November””
So let’s hope they’re actually available by January then 🙂
That will rock when we can start getting 32GB cards! 80 minutes on one card at 720/24P!

Just a warning.
Once you’ve recorded 720/24P on to a tape using the deck, I don’t know of a simple way to digitize it in back to 720/24P because the deck doesn’t flag the footage as 24P like the varicam or the HDX900 does.
There are ticks, but as far as I know, it’s not easy. (I would love to be wrong on this one. So if there is someone who knows better, please let me know.)

[Kevin Hedin] “So the question is, if I ask them to transfer to 720p60, will there be a 3:2 pulldown on the tape?”
It will have a progressive type of the 2:3 pulldown. Meaning two progressive frames of the first frame and three progressive frames of the next frame. Decks don’t add flags to the footage like the cameras do, so removing it can be difficult.
If you record at 1080i, then it will add the traditional interlaced 2:3 pulldown, which can be removed while digitizing using your Kona card. This workflow is very similar to editing a film from DVCAM.
There might be another option as I’ve seen several different 24P settings on our 1200 deck that I don’t understand, but I’ve never found anyone who could tell me what those settings meant.

[Imagine Video] “And is it right to assume then that any transcoding afterwards will be in the right proportions? “
It all depends on what you tell the program that you’re using to compress to set the output size to be.

I’ve just starting using Motion 3 and I have to say that I really like it. It’s not perfect and sometimes it crashes on me, but for 3D graphics I must say that I’m really starting to like it.
I’d upgrade to studio 2.

It really isn’t a problem that QT doesn’t display your PAL anamorphic file as 16:9. They key is to change your setting when you’re compressing your WMV or AVI file to 16:9. (In NTSC land, it would be changing it from 720×480 to something like 640×360. I don’t know exactly what it would be in PAL).
So just change the compression settings to 16:9.

The best card that I know of for that system is the ATI X800, but it’s hard to find quickly. I know you can find the ATI 9600 with same day shipping at macsales.com.

Apparently there are no specialists on Motion’s paint around. Dang.
