[Barry Green] “32GB card will begin shipping “in November””

So let’s hope they’re actually available by January then 🙂

That will rock when we can start getting 32GB cards! 80 minutes on one card at 720/24P!

And the Firestore FS-100 still does 254 minutes of HD capture (110GB capacity) for only $1,600.00. I’m still waiting for the “affordable” 64 GB P2 cards! Maybe then I’ll jump! They’ll get there one of these days…

True but who needs another thing to carry and drop. 254 minutes is 8 hours non-stop recording. Not the sorts of day shoots I’m doing.

    Very cool news, Barry. Thanks!

Hopefully they’ll be easier to track down than the 16GB, which I still can’t snag (though I’ve seen them marked-up several hundred dollars). At this point, though, I’ll wait.

Great news, Barry. Thanks for the update.

As for the Firestore comparison it’s apples to oranges. With P2 cards there’s no waiting for it to power up; No additional batteries to worry about; it can’t be misconfigured; clips can be played back in the camera directly; there’s no cable to mess with; and if you drop it just pick it up and dust it off. Unless it fell out the open door on a helicopter or off a boat transom (yikes!).

That’s great but I still don’t understand why P2 cards are so expensive!

the 16 GB cards are just raided 4 x 4 GB secure digital cards.
The actual memory cost less $200 retail!

I think Panasonic is going to have to cave pretty fast. Between the Red camera using cheaper CF cards and the new Sony using cheaper Cardbus 34 cards, I personally think they’re going to have to cut that price in half to remain competitive.

Of course, they’re also going to have to develop an answer to the Sony EX1… it seems that Sony talked to a lot of HVX200 owners, because it has pretty much all the changes I wanted to see in the HVX200… (1/2″ chips, full res 1920x1080p, and a real lens with a foucus ring that stops, a zoom ring with markings, and an iris ring with markings… on the lens barrel).

No, they’re not. They’re a lot more than that. As Sony found out; their new SxS is actually (based on today’s exchange rate) going to be *more* expensive than P2 is.

[Mitch Ives] “and the new Sony using cheaper Cardbus 34 cards,”

According to Sony’s press release, their 16GB card is 700 Euros. That translates to US $950 or so. How is that cheaper?

Granted, lots of people were *expecting* them to be cheaper, but that doesn’t appear to be what happened in reality.

But yeah, Red’s use of CF definitely points towards some interesting lower-cost options.

Yes, but it’s also 33% more expensive. I would hope that it would offer lots of improvements for that type of price increase.

Jan’s been asking for recommendations for an HVX200″A” over on DVXUser; be sure to add your requests to the list! No idea if we’ll actually get ’em, but it’s important for us to make known what we want.
