In FCP, you select File – Export – QuickTime Movie (NOT QuickTime Conversion).

After having two fibre cables go bad, I totally thing the 5500 is the way to go. Plus you can customize the length. It’s so nice not having our noisy towers in the edit bays!

We use Gefen also. But we did have two of the fibre cables go out on us after a year:(

We’re looking to replace them with the ethernet cable extenders.

We use FCP, not FCE, so I’m not sure what the options are in FCE. It’s my understanding that or SD video, FCE is limited to DV files. I would just say file – export – quicktime movie.

If you need better quality than DV for SD video, you’d better look at some new workflows.

That seems like a normal workflow with FCE and AE.

The rest of your workflow seems normal too. If you want better integration between you’re editing software and AE, then you should look at using Adobe Premiere instead of FCE.

Just to double check your settings:

1. Make sure the switch on the back of the camera is set to Tape.
2. Press the button to the left of the MCR button so the light changes from Tape to Dub.
3. In FCP select Final Cut Pro – Easy Setup
4. Now select the basic DV NTSC setting
5. Open the Log and Capture window
6. Digitize

If it still isn’t working then it might be your computer’s firewire port or the firewire cable you’re using. Try testing those.
