  • FINAL CUT WORKFLOW SUGGESTIONS??

Hey everyone I have a general workflow issue and I just want some tips from anyone out there who is willing to lend some advice. I’ll start off by saying that the programs I use are Final Cut Express HD, Garageband, Adobe After Effects CS3, and Photoshop CS. I’m having a hard time figuring out what the best way is to work with all of these programs. For instance, Im shooting an action movie so I start by cutting a scene together in FCE really rough at first, and from there I fine tune the shots by trimming them and tightening up the edits. After that I usually add some sound effects/music to my scene and play around with it until Im happy. Well, if my scene needs any special effects like muzzle flashes or blood spurts or anything, I end up having to export the sequence and bring that in AE. But from there, Im exporting the scene again from AE and back in FCE. It’s really tedious and time consuming. What the heck should I do? I understand there is Automatic Duck Pro Import but man thats expensive. Just wondering if anyone out there has any general guidelines when editing like this.

I told myself for this particular project, to edit the whole movie first, get the cuts the way you want it. Once finished with that, export each scene, from there, add effects and color correcting where needed/wanted. Once thats done export it and reimport into FCE as single movie files. I figured this would at least keep my timeline a little cleaner and easier to see now that my scenes are worked and saved out as single movie files. From here, add sound effects and music. Export and finish!

    Ideas????? thanks guys

That seems like a normal workflow with FCE and AE.

The rest of your workflow seems normal too. If you want better integration between you’re editing software and AE, then you should look at using Adobe Premiere instead of FCE.

All that sound liek the way I work, except I admit for the simpler stuff I am going into motion instead of AE sometimes.

Also, when exporting your seq to and from AE, be sure to leave pleanty of heads and tails so you can trim your shots after you render out. Adding 2-3 sec on the front and back shouldn’t add too much to your render time.

Thats actually good to hear. But what about HOW I export when going back and forth from FCE and AE? should I just export the shots with compression type “none” ?

We use FCP, not FCE, so I’m not sure what the options are in FCE. It’s my understanding that or SD video, FCE is limited to DV files. I would just say file – export – quicktime movie.

If you need better quality than DV for SD video, you’d better look at some new workflows.

Always use source compression, you don’t want to recompress everytime your import or export.

YES! source compression. How do I go about doing that? I’ve been just exporting the sequences using no compression type and then for the size i just set it to “current.” What ahould I do to make it export as “source compression?” I shoot with a Sondy HDR FX1 but the particular project im working on now is shot in SD….No HD on this project.

It has been mentioned by the guys already…

FILE > EXPORT > QUICKTIME MOVIE…self contained. do not check RECOMPRESS. This makes a self contained movie using the source compression of the source clips…just copying data.

Make you selection in your timeline with the in/out markers then-

    FILE->EXPORT->QUICKTIME MOVIE

    THEN SETTINGS ARE-

    SETTING- CURRENT SETTINGS
    INCLUDE- (WHATEVER YOU WANT)
    MARKERS-NONE

AND CHECK “MAKE MOVIE SELF CONTAINED”

Don’t use reference movies, they will only get you in trouble later on, disk spae is so cheap nowadays, there is no need for it.
I thought you were exporting single clips, not whole sequences. So, yes, this is they best way to do it.

In FCP, you select File – Export – QuickTime Movie (NOT QuickTime Conversion).
