We looked at DLT-S4 because of tape cost vs. size. We finally decided to just go with hard drives because the cost of drives is dropping so quickly. So we buy two hard drives and keep them in separate locations.

Have you rendered the clips in the timeline or are you playing them back using your RT settings? (If it isn’t blue above the clip, it isn’t rendered)

While I use cards from both manufacturers, I prefer the AJA cards. AJA has a great reputation for having great hardware and even better support. I’d lean toward the Kona LHe if you can afford it. But the Decklink card isn’t a bad option if that’s what you end up with.

We use XML all the time to transfer sequences between 5 and 6. It’s worked really well.

With OS 10.5 you might try using the screen sharing feature in iChat.

If you select the sequence in the browser, you can drag it into the timeline and hold the command key to insert the sequence as original clips instead of a nested sequence.

That might help, but it’s still kind of like copy and paste.

I don’t know of a way to just unnest a sequence with a key stoke.

Unfortunately, FCP isn’t really designed for editing clips like that, as you’ve found out. You’ve got a good idea to edit at maybe 15 fps instead of at 29.97 if you’re just going to compress it to a 15 fps flv file.

So you should edit at the frame rate that you’re going to deliver in and convert all the clips to that frame rate, resolution and codec to make things easier.

Are you editing in FCP5 or 6 because 6 should handle the differences better without having to render.
