For new FCP suite, what I/O card should we use and why – the choice is between Decklink HD Extreme and AJA Kona HLe.

Initially it is for online conform of DVCPRO HD material, but will be used with other HD format in future, and potentially RED in the near future also.

I’ve used the Blackmagic card before and am probably going that way, but just thought I should ask about the AJA as well.

    Hi Sycophant.

If you use the little search bubble at the top of the page and type in “Blackmagic vs AJA” you will find many threads pertaining to this.

If you have any other specific questions, fell free to post back and also know there are AJA and Blackmagic forums here on the Cow. You can check those out as well if you have specific questions about each one.

While I use cards from both manufacturers, I prefer the AJA cards. AJA has a great reputation for having great hardware and even better support. I’d lean toward the Kona LHe if you can afford it. But the Decklink card isn’t a bad option if that’s what you end up with.

Both are good, and BlackMagic tech support has greatly improved.

The Decklink Extreme can upconvert SD to HD…the AJA LH cannot.
