I have talked about this for years, but in my new IoHD article here on the COW, I have posted in writing for the first time the process of using Aja hardware to extract Varicam flagged frames in realtime.

Since Aja uses the same Control Panel for all of their cards the process to remove frames is the same over the entire HD product line, not just for the IoHD

    That’s a great article! Thanks!

FYI, in the main title it says, “Is is what you’re looking for.” I think you meant to say, “Is this what you’re looking for.” It’s still a very good article regardless!

Hi thank you Gary for a very enlightening post.

But does this it convert from the various frame rates to 25fps PAL? I more than often find that we are a bit forgotten over here in PAL land. If it does I will pursue one tomorrow.

And also did you say that all the hd capture cards from AJA can read and convert the flagged frames?

Grateful for all possible knowledge in this matter
    /Markus

[markus hejdenberg] “But does this it convert from the various frame rates to 25fps PAL?”

While there is not a PAL Varicam specific preset in the current builds of the kona drivers, at my ( and others ) insistence there will be in future versions. this is as much because FCP has not properly supported 720p 25 workflows until FCP6 ( and we are still waiting for 720p50)

You can modify the 23.98 preset to a 25fps frame rate – the bigger issue is that FCP is still having issues with output to 50fps instead of 60 fps for varicam footage

and yes the Kona HD card drivers all support VFR capture.

Thanks Gary! I have been looking for a device that will let me capture video, audio, and timecode over one HD-SDI cable and I had called AJA about the IoHD before it was released. I think they were hesitant to say flat out “Yes, it does that” because of the FCP limitation, so thank you for spelling it out.

    yeah

NOT having FCP see the SLTC timecode over anything but 9pin serial is a pain in the but, but
the fact that AJA VTR exchange app does do this is great.
