You could also do the conversion in FCP by selecting File-Export-QuickTime Movie. Then instead of selecting use current settings, select the DVCPROHD format that you want.

I would design the scroll in either Motion or After Effects. Then render it out to the native codec of your timeline.
FCP does a horrible job with scrolling text.

If you have a portable green screen then you could shoot the scene with and without the talent. Then composite them together.
But rotoscoping might be the best option because you’re dealing with such a wide range of colors.

Using three firewire drives to form a RAID won’t really improve speed that much because they are all on the same firewire bus. The most common RAIDs that you see right now are probably SATA drives.

Also, what camera did you shoot on, how did you digitize it, and what format is your timeline?

I think that the speed of the processor has the biggest impact on rendering times in FCP.
There are other times that hard drive speed and RAM might have a big impact. What type of files are you rendering? Do any of your computers have less than 1GB of RAM?
