  • GREEN CANVAS — Trashing Prefs Doesn’t Help

Posted by Paul Spillenger on November 9, 2007 at 6:10 pm

Here is a problem that has suddenly, with no apparent cause, appeared. I have read through dozens of posts complaining of a similar problems and hundreds of posts that offer advice on how to fix it.

My system is FCP 5.0.4, running on a Power Mac G5 Quad, with 4 gigs of memory.

    THE PROBLEM

Two days ago, when I started up the program after a hiatus of 2 months, I found that my canvas was green. It is green everywhere there isn

If you create a new FCP project and put some new clips in, is the canvas still green?

If you export an XML of your timeline and import it into a new project, is the canvas still green?

If you use the render manager to delete all of the render files does that help?

What type of footage and codec are you working with?

    Russ–

    Thanks for your reply.

If you create a new FCP project and put some new clips in, is the canvas still green?

    YES

If you export an XML of your timeline and import it into a new project, is the canvas still green?

    YES

If you use the render manager to delete all of the render files does that help?

    NO

What type of footage and codec are you working with?

    HDV 1080I60 UNCOMPRESSED

Again, I’ve been using this exact system for this exact kind of footage for the last 2 years and never had this problem. I suspect some kind of file corruption.

Did you just upgrade to QT 7.3.0? There are several problems happening, including green canvas output, and other things that I have at the moment…

YES!!! I was just about to mention that (1) I had trashed and reinstalled FCP only to see the problem was still there, and (2) could it possibly be a problem with QT 7.3?

If this is the case, should I trash QT 7.3? And if so, is it possible to get the pre-upgrade version?

    Thanks,

    Hi!

I had problems with green canvas… it was weird.
I couldn’t get rid of it.

Only upgrading from FCP 5 to 6 solve the problem…

    regards

I haven’t had any luck finding the stand alone installer for 7.2.1. I think the idea is to archive and install your system software from the Tiger disc and then upgrade QT separately from the stand alone, but I can’t find it. In my case, I’m waiting on Apple or Imagine software to post a patch to this problem soon, which I sure hope happens. My problem is with P2 clips brought into FCP via P2 log pro.

I can’t help but think of how easy it would be for you if you were using Time Machine in Leopard.

It has now been several days since this problem first appeared. This is what I know:

    1. It is clearly more than just a green canvas issue. My sequences are also producing a dropped frame error message that stops playback and advises me to set my RT to Safe. This is strange, because I have played these sequences for a long time with no such problem. I seem to have enough RAM (4 gigs) and enough free space on all my drives, especially my scratch disk, so that my resources should not being taxed.

    2. It is not a preferences issue, because not only have I trashed my preferences (several times), but I have completely re-installed Final Cut 5.0.4, after trashing the application, the prefs and the receipts.

    3. It may or not have been caused by downloading the QuickTime 7.3 upgrade, but I have trashed the QT app, prefs and receipts, and the problem is the same. Can the QT upgrade have changed something on my hard drive that deleting these files failed to address?

    4. It seems somehow to be connected to HDV editing, because when I change my Easy Setup to DV NTSC, I get a regular black screen.

    5. I have disconnected my external media drives, and started up FCP. The screen is still green.

    6. Apple refuses to give me any help on this because the software is out of its 90-day coverage window.

Can it be that this problem is beyond the expertise of such as august group of FCP afionados as you? Please say it ain’t so.

    Thanks,
    Giraut

I had this exact problem. I called apple and of course they have never heard of the problem, I was the first. What I did to fix the problem was to do a clean install of OS X and Final Cut Studio. That did it.
