Another option is to put the 2:1 files in a 1920×1080 sequence. I’ve been able to play them out that way with RTextreme quality set to medium or low.
But the Kona 3 will be the way to go because you won’t have to change the quality settings.

It will do it if you’re dealing with image sequences instead of QT movies. But it will be very hard to edit in AE because it only does RAM previews and most of the time, it’s not exactly real time. I believe the new version of Premiere doesn’t have the same QT limitation because you can edit image sequences. I could be wrong though. I also don’t know if Premiere will work on PowerPC Macs.

The iMac is a good machine, but is limited in expandability. There are very few solutions if you need to capture from something other than firewire.
I think the iMac is a great offline edit system, but I wouldn’t consider it for a finishing station.
I personally would rather go for the $2299 Mac Pro with 4-cores or the refurbished 8-core 2.8Ghz Mac Pro for $2499. That way, on the low end, you can add a Intensity Pro for $349 as an IO and then upgrade to whatever you need later. Also, you can just add more hard drives internally as you need more room instead of dealing firewire.
But again, for some people, the iMac is a perfect solution.

I think he was talking about 512MB RAM on the graphics card. The 3.06Ghz iMac comes with a standard of 2GB internal RAM.

I think that QT has some limitation in size. I know that from the RED camera, QT can’t handle the 4K and 3K QT proxies. I think the limitation is some where around 2K. So if you need to do the size you’re looking at doing, I’d suggest using image sequences using After Effects or Premiere.

I would go with a Mac Pro over an iMac if you can afford it. You don’t need the top of the line version, but a referbished 2.8Ghz 8-core is a great machine. You can start with using a inexpensive monitor, then upgrade later. For RAM, I suggest either crucial.com or macsales.com. For a hard drive, you can just buy an extra SATA drive.
The iMac isn’t a bad machine though, it’s just not nearly as flexible for the future as a Mac Pro is.

I would try to use the 3-way color corrector. For an explanation on how to use it, check out the FCP manual.
You can also add more than one 3-way color filter to a clip to make more complex adjustments.

Sharing video media over basic Apple file sharing isn’t as reliable as using a SAN. You can try it, but it’s possible to do. I’ve done things like that when I’ve been sort on equipment, but I don’t suggest it as an everyday solution.
