what’s most bang for the buck at the moment? been awhile since I bought a new one. I will be using it for FCP suite SD and HDV or whatever flavor of HD prosumer level comes up in the next 1-4 years. I hear talk that an Imac will do the trick and hear talk that the pro models are still the way to go. Also basic advice on where to get the extra ram and how much ram is worth it and extra hard drives. FWIW i qualify for ed discount.

I would go with a Mac Pro over an iMac if you can afford it. You don’t need the top of the line version, but a referbished 2.8Ghz 8-core is a great machine. You can start with using a inexpensive monitor, then upgrade later. For RAM, I suggest either crucial.com or macsales.com. For a hard drive, you can just buy an extra SATA drive.

The iMac isn’t a bad machine though, it’s just not nearly as flexible for the future as a Mac Pro is.
