Go to Window-Effects. That should pull up the window. Then you can dock it to the browser again by grabbing the tab an placing it back in the browser. Just drag it over to the other tabs in the browser.

I guess the reason why it’s set up that way is because that’s the way that clips behave. When you put a clip in the timeline, it becomes independent of the clip in the browser.

No. It does not upconvert.

You could try using InstantHD and see if you like the results. You could edit everything and then go through and just use the software to upconvert the shots that need it.

On our SAN, we do it the same way. Digitize it using a basic project. Then when you’re done, copy it to the project folder and import it into the main project. It’s really easy and intuitive.

If I were you, I’d decide what codec you are going to finish it and edit in that. For example, in your case, I would either choose DVCPROHD or PRORES. If you need uncompressed, then this doesn’t work for you.
Next, choose the resolution you need. If you need an HD master and will be using footage shot at 1080P, then I would choose 1080P. Anything that isn’t 1080P will have to be converted to it by either using a Kona 3 to upconvert while digitizing, using FCP to scale the clips, or some sort of plugin or other workflow.

If tracks 3/4 are almost mute, then I think that you’d probably be safe not using them.

For me, I think the 8-core 2.8Ghz is the sweet spot. I would much rather save the $1600 or $800 now and when the next versions come out that have maybe 12-cores (2x 6-core instead of 2x 4-core) sell the 2.8Ghz and spend the extra money to upgrade.
But it all depends on how you’ll use your system.

Maybe I’m wrong then. I’m just recently starting to get over my phobia of nesting in FCP. I’ll play with it sometime and see what’s happening.

Sounds like an okay option, but I’m really attached to my keyboard and hitting Apple+J, then typing in the percentage. It would be nice to have that option.

I would like to see FCP have a simple box to check when you open the speed change dialog that allowed you to select either an insert or overwrite action. Then have a preference that allowed you to choose which was your default.
Or maybe Apple+J opened an insert and Apple+Shift+J opened up an overwrite.
