Posted this in the OSX forum as well….

    Hi All,

I’m looking to upgrade my workhorse G5 as I’m doing a lot more AE, C4D and compositing work. Needless to say, I’m really taxing my system.

    My question is this:

How much faster is the MacPro 3.0 vs. the 3.2 GHz? Is it 0.2 GHz faster? Or 0.2 GHz x 8 cores? Which by my horrible math, would add 1.6GHz…

Am I way off base? I’m trying to get the best machine for the money, but knowing that I’ll be installing at least 16GB of RAM, the extra savings on the tower would come in handy.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Jason

For me, I think the 8-core 2.8Ghz is the sweet spot. I would much rather save the $1600 or $800 now and when the next versions come out that have maybe 12-cores (2x 6-core instead of 2x 4-core) sell the 2.8Ghz and spend the extra money to upgrade.

But it all depends on how you’ll use your system.

I just bought the 2.8 and took the difference and used it to buy additional RAM and a 1Tb internal “utility” drive.
I think the additional RAM will speed things up nicely.
