Just thought I’d throw this out there. The FCP World Tour starts tomorrow in Hollywood. My guess is that if we’re going to see an update, it would probably come before the tour starts, and not sometime during the tour.

We’ll have to see what happens. Anyone planning on going to the world tour?

What sort of update would you be expecting? They’re advertising Final Cut Studio 2 right in the ad so it’s really a tour about Final Cut Server. Sure they’ll show the RED workflow, but there’s really nothing new to see unless you’re interested in Server.

So no, I’m not going when it hits Atlanta.

FCP 6.5:) or FCS2.5 (with upgraded DVDSP)

It could happen. It’s not likely, but it could happen.

[walter biscardi] “I’m not going when it hits Atlanta.”

And I’m not taking the time to go here in L.A. either even though several friends invited me to join them.

I just can’t believe that three weeks after being no-shows at NAB, that Apple would suddenly reveal big secrets they’ve been hiding behind the curtain.

    I so hope I’m wrong though…

I would stick with the “not likely” part of that. Anything is possible since only about 5 people know what Apple is up to these days, but I wouldn’t put any money on it.

I assume they’ll go more in depth on the Tour about FC Server than they did at the last LAFCPUG meeting. If not… oh well, it’s an afternoon out of the office. 🙂

There will not be an update… but it is a great program. Some really good case studies and ideas.

That’s al I can say… but trust me.

Walter, I’ve noticed a tone change in your posts about Apple and FCP. You sound a bit bitter these days, like a guy about to make a switch. Your posts used to talk about everything working well in your shop, but now they are about Apple exlcusivity, buggy releases and the like. Have you noticed?

Not about to make a switch but what I’m annoyed with two things:

1 – NAB is the one place where anyone in the world can come and learn about all the toys and software they might need in the coming year. Apple blew it off (so did Avid, but I don’t use their products so it doesn’t matter to me)

2 – Apple keeps releasing new features without addressing the basic flaws in the software that make us jump through hoops in the workflows.

After FCP 4.0 Apple dropped their Beta program to an unbelieveably small amount of people. Since then, we primarily get new features without addressing the basic foundation that still needs a lot of work.

So when you only have a few, and I mean VERY FEW people testing the product, what we end up with is a lack of input from may editor using many workflows to ensure that basic workflow issues are addressed. Such as 720p Drop Frame. It took Apple three years to implement something so basic and simple. Panasonic had Drop Frame in 720p from the day DVCPro HD was introduced, but Apple did not allow me to edit in a Drop Frame timeline for three years. So I had to jump through hoops to ensure that a 720p show would time out correct for U.S. Drop Frame distribution.

You also get issues like all the PAL folks always find a bunch of issues with each new major release of FCP, bugs / crashes caused by issues with FCP and Quicktime, Apple seems to break working features with each new release, and often we’ll find out that a certain combination of machine / QT / FCP versions will cause all sorts of issues. If Apple had a realistic Beta testing program many of these issues could be caught early.

So my frustrations comes with the fact that the software is going on 7 years old and we still have very basic workflow issues that are not addressed and the software continues to be flaky as it matures. No software is perfect, no software is bug free, but for me Final Cut Pro just is not the “Mature, Professional Editing Software” it really should be at this stage of the game.

Yeah I can understand your frustration. I can remember at last years NAB special event when they were announcing new features they repeatedly said “We hear/ed you”. Hopefully they are still listening to you.
