When you bring in your files using Log and Transfer, they come in at 2k instead of 1080P. The Kona 3 will output the 2048 in realtime without needing to use your CPU for processing like you would have to do with the Kona LHe.
Also, check out the Kona 3/RED whitepaper.

It’s probably a muxed mpeg2 file. FCP won’t recongize the audio. Try using MPEG Streamclip to render to a different format or extract the audio.

December 1, 2008 at 11:36 pm in reply to: Red feature output to HDCAM 1080i/59.94 — festival screening questionsIf you’re going to do a final color correction in Color, I would suggest you read the latest whitepaper on how the latest FCS2 works with RED files.
Go to RED’s support page and download the RED Final Cut Studio 2 Installer. Read through the whitepaper, do some tests on your own, then come back and let us know if you have other questions.

If you mean that you’re going to shoot at 60P, then it will be good. But if you’re going to shoot 60i, I would suggest shooting it 30P instead. Keying off of interlaced footage can be messy.
Personally I like the look of 24P more than 30P, but that’s personal preference.

So if you change one clip, it removes the render files not just for that one clip, but the whole project? If this is happening, something isn’t right. Are you dealing with nested sequences by chance?

Most DCPs are encrypted. Even if it isn’t encrypted, the DCP would be a JPEG-2000 image sequence in the XYZ colorspace. You REALLY don’t want anything to do with this!
If you don’t get the QT files instead, you’ll be in a world of hurt!

November 3, 2008 at 5:16 am in reply to: Sony LMD-2450W vs TV Logic LVM-241W/242W vs JVC DT-V24L1DI also like the TV Logic, but we ended up purchasing the eCinema FX24 (the higher models aren’t shipping yet so it was the best we could get for now).
For $4300, I’ve been pretty impressed with it.
I don’t like the viewing angle of the JVC monitors. Makes color grading very difficult.
I looked at a Sony Luma series a while ago and was very unimpressed by it.

If you’re really interested in a gigabit ethernet solution, I’d suggest contacting small-tree.com. They’re having success with FCP and gigabit ethernet and they really know their stuff when it comes to Mac.

October 29, 2008 at 4:51 pm in reply to: FCP HD system FOR DVC PRO 50 EDITING on a budget[willy pimentel] “1 – would the card support the additional monitor for NTSC preview (don’t have the deck) “
The graphics card will not. If you’re only dealing in SD footage, try to find a used SD card from AJA or Blackmagic Design off ebay or something. Or get the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for $350.
[willy pimentel] “2 – Internal raid combination for DVDpro 50? “
DVCPRO50 is only about 6MB/sec. A Seagate 7200.11 drive can do over 90MB/sec. That’s like 15 streams of DVCPRO50 off of one drive. You don’t really need a RAID unless you want backup protection incase a drive dies. You could go with the CalDigit RAID card and create a 2 TB RAID 5 using three internal 1TB drives. Anyways, there are a lot of options.
[willy pimentel] “3 – Additional card? don’t need it for input since i’ll borrow a deck for input and output…. “
Just for outputting to a SD broadcast monitor.
[willy pimentel] “4 – this set up would give me realtime editing? playback and output? “
An iMac would give you realtime editing with DVCPRO50. What you’re getting will be rocking!
