I’ve asked this question before and never got a clear answer other than FCP doesn’t like them. But I’m thinking of getting a High Speed NAS server (Sans Digital AccuNas) for our studio for a more centralized storage solution. We are Editing in SD IMX 50 and some 8 bit Uncmprsd so it’s not going to exceed 270mb/s. People have told me that there is overhead with Gigabit but If I use half of the bandwidth what does that matter? I still plan to use our Xserve Raid for our Main Editing but want a solution that I can dump the final product on to and playout from our other Editors or Capture to.

If you’re really interested in a gigabit ethernet solution, I’d suggest contacting small-tree.com. They’re having success with FCP and gigabit ethernet and they really know their stuff when it comes to Mac.
