To export tracking and shape data from a mocha product, you need mocha Pro. If you own After Effects, the bundled mocha AE can be upgraded to mocha Pro.

I’m wanting to export my shape and tracking data into Nuke. However, I’m finding that when I click on export tracking data or export shape data, that the option in the format drop down menu for nuke is not there. For that matter, the ONLY format is for AE.

I’m currently using the latest version for Mocha in AE. Is this again a limitation of Mocha in AE? Is there a work around?

    Thanks,

    Annemarie

I was able to get a very good solve in mocha after some experimentation.

First, I believe your clip has pulldown? Make sure to remove the pulldown so you are tracking in frame based material. mocha can do this on import, but I prefer to send mocha clean frames and personally would remove in AE.

Next I created a tight track shape around the text in center.

Then using the Add X-spline to layer button I added another shape to the track layer focusing on the upper left corner. This detail helps the track be more solid.

Last, I turned min % of pixels to use to 100 and tracked with shear on, perspective off.

I know this seems like a lot of tweaks, but in a few minutes I was able to greatly reduce the drifts that I saw in your preview.

    All the best,
    Ross

This shot has “very little” detail to track. If you can upload it for me, we can take a quick look. If anything can track it, it will be mocha.

April 2, 2013 at 7:52 pm in reply to: How to apply texture to the rotating bottle?

mocha Pro has a mesh warper in the Insert Module to “bend” the logo. It might also take some manual work, but probably much faster than going the 3D route.

mocha has been used successfully on face tracking and digital makeup on many feature films. For example tracking bruises on to rugby player in the film Invictus.

  • Thanks very much!!!

We really owe quite a lot to our customers and user base who helped push us over the years.
Along these lines, please continue to help by contributing footage to our 2013 mocha reel. We are looking for interesting projects assisted by mocha. Email mocha@imagineersystems.com for upload info.

  • Hi Simon,
I think you’ve got it. I would not get overly hung up on the “focus/depth of field” aspect of my explanation.

Think of this as an example: say you used mocha’s 3D solver to solve the position of an actor on a set and the track looked spot on and a 3D Null represented the actors position in relation to the camera. If you viewed this 3D camera and Null from a top view in After Effects and repositioned the Null in Z space, it might not necessarily be in the proper 3D space. So yes, for multiple 3D objects interacting in a scene, mocha’s tracker is not the appropriate solution.

mocha uses only couple planes in its 3D camera solver. The more you use, the more accurate the solve will be, but still – it is using a different method than camera tracking software.

January 10, 2013 at 5:20 pm in reply to: Rotoscoping Programs?

To add to this thread, mocha v3 adds some features requested by roto artists:

transform tool to rotate, scale & skew points, shapes or groups
    more shortcuts (nudge, diagonal nudge)
    multi-select, group & fold layers
    color code splines & fills
    improved keyframe interface (dopesheet).

Hope this helps. So, mocha AE v3 which has some of the advanced roto features is an affordable upgrade from the bundled mocha AE v3.

  • Just to add to Tom’s previous post, I wanted to give a couple of my “biased” reasons on why After Effects users might be interested in upgrading to mocha AE v3.

Beyond the 3D camera solver module, mocha AE v3 has the following features not included the mocha AE CS6 bundle:

    Interface:
    • more short cuts for nudge, hiding overlays, etc
    • dopesheet keyframe editor

    Improved Roto Tools & workflow:
    • transform tool for shape and layer editing
    • color code splines & fills
    • multi-select layers, fold and group layers

Lens Module & mocha Lens Plug-in:
    • analyze lens distortion
    • remove or match lens distortion
Lens module can be useful even when using the AE Camera tracker to create a more natural lens match on inserted 3D elements.

    Added Support formats:
    • export to Apple Final Cut Pro v7, Motion, HitFilm and Boris FX
The export to Boris FX is very useful if you want to send mocha track data to Avid Media Composer, Symphony or Sony Vegas Pro.

If you are an AE user and only use mocha AE CS6 for the occasional corner pinned screen insert, maybe the upgrade is not for you. But if you use mocha for any rotoscoping/masking tasks or want to take advantage of the 3D camera solve and lens distortion module, it is a very useful upgrade.
