January 10, 2013 at 4:44 pm in reply to: The Foundry Camera Tracker versus Imagineer Mocha Ae v3 Camera Solver FeatureHello Simon,
mocha v3 products (mocha AE v3 and mocha Pro v3) use the planar tracker and different technology methods to solve 3D camera movement. We designed the camera solver to be very fast and use many less features (pixels) than 3D camera software such as Syntheyes, PFTrack, etc.One common problem we have seen from customers is on shots taken in large green screen studios in which the wall and tracking markers are very out of focus. These kind of shots can be problematic for 3D feature trackers, but mocha can usually handle the out of focus track.
The actual result that you get out of mocha’s camera solve is different in that it solves the camera’s motion in relation to select planes. What that means is mocha does not produce an accurate camera model for the entire scene. You can use mocha’s camera module, then drop in a 3D text element or model that is relative to the the planes that you tracked, but if you had multiple 3D elements in the scene on different planes, they wouldn’t necessarily be in the proper 3D space. Hopefully this makes sense…
mocha 3D camera solve module does not replace 3D camera software. Tracking applications (Syntheyes, PFTrack, etc) are very powerful and necessary for tasks in which you have multiple 3D elements in a scene. Where mocha’s 3D solver really excels is for set extensions (digital matte paintings), simply adding 1 element to 3D comp and of course shots that have very little features to track or are out of focus.
mocha’s 3D solve also solves “moving objects” and exports animated 3D nulls for AE. This is something the CS6 camera tracker doesn’t do and can be useful for tracking 3D particles (Particular or Boris Fx) to a moving object in a scene.
Hopefully this answers your questions. You can check out a good video tutorial from Ben Brownlee showing the moving object tracking here: https://youtu.be/tYKSw2rj_QQ
Since this is getting long, I’ll add a bit more on the next thread.

Hi Tom,
AE CS6 does not ship with mocha AE v3. Imagineer released mocha v3 products about 6 months after CS6 came out. There is an affordable upgrade path.To view a chart that compares mocha AE CS6 and mocha AE v3.1 go here:
https://www.imagineersystems.com/compare-productsThere are some pretty useful features not found in the AE bundled version including: 3D Solver, Lens Distortion Analysis, support for FCP and Motion, etc.

Hi Grayson,
It is possible that mocha might be able to get a good solve on the footage. It all depends on if there are some good solid planes to track throughout the shot. In the case of a Football game, you will want to track the ground and possibly the stands or walls.mocha Pro and mocha AE versions 3 both have a 3D camera solver and you can check out the related tutorials here:
https://www.imagineersystems.com/videos?tagFilter=3D+Camera+Solve+Module&sortBy=NewestIf you can post the file, I can also have someone from Imagineer take a look and see if mocha can help.

Using the link to track on “none” would be useful technique for the ground plane in the lower front. You will also need to track 2 other surfaces portion of trees in background or sky) as for a large parallax camera move, mocha’s camera solve requires 2-3 tracked surfaces.
The methodology is to track each surface well, then verify that the track is good by looking at the grid in mocha. You may have to track, stop, back a few frames, move the shape, re-track to get the background areas.
Once you have the 3 surfaces tracked, select all, make sure your solver is set to large parallax, then solve.
I’d also recommend watching any of the tutorials found here on Imagineer’s site. Here is a good one: https://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/mocha-v3-tutorial-using-the-camera-solver-to-track-difficult-footage/view
Good luck,

The steps appear correct. A few notes:
If you don’t have a good solid background track, you most likely see artifact errors in the remove.
If the clean frames do not exist in the clip (for example the camera is not moving enough OR the remove object is so close to the background the clean areas do not exist in the shot) you will have to provide the remove module with some clean frames (usually painted or cloned in Photoshop).
Your best bet is to watch all the Remove Module tutorials on Imagineers web site and contact support if still having issues.

To add to the advice from Roland, if you are doing a 3D camera solve for Cinema 4D, you will need to select multiple planes to track. For example, the floor, and various parts of the wall and pillars.
I’d recommend watching some of Martin Brennand’s mocha tutorials on 3D solver: https://www.imagineersystems.com/videos?tagFilter=3D+Camera+Solve+Module&sortBy=Newest
If you are only looking for 2D track, than the key is where you place your shapes to either animate to avoid the foreground pillars OR to subtract the foreground by putting garbage masks above the floor layer for tracking.
hope this helps

You can do a smoothed stabilize with the bundled mocha AE and the mocha Import plug-in from Mamoworld:
You can also do similar with mocha Pro which can render stabilized or smoothed shots with autofill on the edges.
Here are a few more stabilize tutorials on the mocha web site:

October 31, 2012 at 8:48 pm in reply to: Align surface in Mocha tracks patch correctly, but scene motion excedes the bounds of the pre-compThe AE corner pin can have limitations due to the nature of the source pins being locked to comp size.
A good solution to try is Red Giant Warp plug–in which allows you to import mocha corner pin data and adjust the source pins separately. This should allow you to mix comp and insert sizes.
You could also look into using mochaImport script which is a different process (stabilize, comp, then invert stabilize). This may allow you to stabilize the comp, put it into a larger, stabilized precomp for your larger than frame insert, etc.
Lastly – mocha Pro does have an insert module that allows you to use a larger than frame insert.
I think RG Warp may be your best bet.
Good luck,
