You could also try the cheaper version of the V1U which is the Sony HC-1. It came out in ’05 but is a very good HDV camera which I still use. You should be able to find a cheap one online I would think.

The FSB-6 head is much larger but it stabalizes the head much better too. The tripod comes with its own carry bag as well.

I have the same setup a Clint and love mine. The carbon fiber Sachtler and FSB-6 head are a great combo. Once you use a good tripod you will never go back. I got mine for $1650 total but the aluminum legs are cheaper. Also, mine has just one clamp per leg so it is fast to setup. Not sure if the Manfrotto will be stable enough for the EX-1.

January 5, 2010 at 7:25 pm in reply to: Editing on a MBP – minimum specs for smooth playback? It sounds like you have the same setup as I have. I am able to playback 2-3 streams smoothly from an external firewire drive. Are your playback settings set to “unlimited” or “dynamic”? That could make a difference. Also, make sure all rendering is done in the timeline or you can get very slow playback.

What is your gain setting? Keep it as low as possible, that is a very grainy shot you posted. Also, have you changed any camera profiles? If so what are they?

I am using one of Porta Braces bags and it works great. Not sure what the model number is but if you go to their web site it is the one listed for the EX-3. It has room for extra gear and still fits the carry on size for aircraft. I think it is listed in the carry on section on Porta Braces site.

In the browser you can check the clip properties by scrolling across several colums until you see it listed. You can also right click on the clip and choose clip settings (or something similar, I’m not sure of the exact words).

Yes, you can use Sony’s Clip Browser or XD CAM Transfer to get your footage into your computer on site. I used this setup in Romania for two weeks of concert shoots but I used two external hard drives to make sure I had a backup of my footage. I would recommend two cards and then you should not have to transfer on site.
