It sounds like one of more of your edit points is at the end of the original media. You need to set your in and out points with at least a half second handle for the default transition to work.

OK, but what is the difference between true speed and aperature? Isn’t it the same thing? Is F2.8 the same as T2.8?

That issue had crossed my mind regarding archiving. I am so used to taking the DV/DVCAM tape and putting it on the shelf and relying on it being there and with solid state cards being so expensive. It must be kind of scary recording over the original and if something happens to your external hard drive, your screwed.
That is why we use two or more hard drives to back up our work. Not scary at all.

Stay away from the Blue Snowball. I had one and it was impossible to get enough volume out of it. Get a powered mic. if possible.

If your RAID 1 protected it won’t matter if your drive goes down with the project file. You still have it on the other RAID 1 drive. I keep everything related to a project in one master folder with many individule folders inside holding all my assets oranized by folder. With RAID 1 I dont worry about losing anything and as I edit everything is saved to two drives and kept together so I don’t lose anything. No worries.

Wait just a minute! The 17 inch MacBook Pro still has an Express 34 slot so it will be just fine with SXS. Don’t give up on it. SXS through the express 34 slot is super fast but I only get about 7X faster than real time not 11.

I have had great luck with the LaCie Rugged drive using FW 800. I talked to a guy that used them in Afganistan shooting a feature on the Special Forces. He said they never gave him a problem either. He used several of them. I use two so I can have an instant back up in the field. I have heard good things about the G-Drive mini too.

I understand your problem. But keep in mind during low light shooting when you are shooting from a distance you can’t use a light that is bright enough to help. This is where the -1 or -3 are much superior to the nxcam. Last weekend we did a multicam shoot inside a church with an EX-1 and two nxcams. Looking at the footage later it was very apparent that the nxcams had more grain. There were times we had to use +9 db gain on the -1 and it was still better than the nx’s using only +6 db gain. Also, I’m not sure but does the nxcam have peaking for focus assist? I use that feature on almost every shot. I personally own an EX-3 and love the veiwfinder. I am using a DM Accessories shoulder mount, and while a little heavy with a tripod mount attached as well it really steadies the camera when shooting handheld. Good luck, I vote for the EX-1.
