Fast Portable drive for Mac Book pro on which to dump ex1 footage?
Hello, I\’m looking for a quality, reliable, fast, & preferably cheap portable hard drive on which, primarily I can dump off a colleague\’s ex1 footage in the field, although it would be useful to be use it whenever I need to take grab large amounts of data/video from my producers mac pro, to transfer then on to my mac pro/raid for editing.
I have a mac book pro for use in the field editing and was thinking the FireWire 800 port is quick, but I\’m puzzling over what the set up would be? Or if there is better way?
I was thinking a 1tb drive ought to be enough.
I have Seagate drives in mac pro, and touch wood they\’ve been very good, and googling the Seagate flex go pro looked the sort of thing I\’m thinking but how would you set that up for a quick transfer of data from either the camera card or a \”drive to drive\” transfer, utilising the mac book pro if necessary?

I use the G-Tech Drive Mini https://g-technology.com/products/g-drive-mini.cfm but it is only 500 gigs. It’s small. I never edit on it, so it should last a while. Only edit on drives with a fan or you’ll burn em up sooner.

I have had great luck with the LaCie Rugged drive using FW 800. I talked to a guy that used them in Afganistan shooting a feature on the Special Forces. He said they never gave him a problem either. He used several of them. I use two so I can have an instant back up in the field. I have heard good things about the G-Drive mini too.

No it’s not for editing, just to use as a portable device to transfer files from camera cards, or from one mac pro to another.
I do like g-tech and was giving it serious thought so how would you use it with a macbook pro which has ex card adaptor slot, loads of USB ports, fw800 port? Card in, fw out to g mini, I presume?

Firewire 800 out from the laptop and SxS cards in the slot, XDCam Browser for ingesting. It’s 11 time faster ingesting than the footage length itself. Then if you don’t have Calibrated software on your editing computer, use XDCam Transfer to re-wrap the footage so you can edit on FCP. This is what I use. But they don’t make laptops with SxS card slots anymore, so you’d have to get a card reader.

Wait just a minute! The 17 inch MacBook Pro still has an Express 34 slot so it will be just fine with SXS. Don’t give up on it. SXS through the express 34 slot is super fast but I only get about 7X faster than real time not 11.

I have a 500GB G Drive mobile which I like a lot because it is Bus powered so I don’t have to remember the power cable. Also, it is wallet-sized and comes with USB 2, FW 800 and 400 cables.

I’ve used many G-Drive Minis over the past few years. Unfortunately I’ve had three of them crash. The form factor is great, but find them too unreliable. I’ve had pretty good luck with the LaCie Rugged drives.

Three years that I use the LaCie LittleBigDik to back my EX/NANO in the field.
They are simply great.

After my last post concerning the G-Mini, I thought it would be appropriate to further comment on G-Tech products. I’ve used their G-Speed RAID and G-Drives for years and they’ve been very reliable. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending them to anyone.
