I just finished a 5 month 20 week racing show that aired on 4 TV stations in my state shot exclusively with the Ex-3 with the stock lens. This program was shot in the most difficult situation and the video that we were able to capture was outstanding. The cars were moving around a 1/4-3/8 mile track at speeds over 100 mph and the light (poor as it was) changed every 10-20 feet. Some times I had to shoot at 9DB gain and 1.9 to get a good image and the EX-3 came through with flying colors. In the whole 20 shows (over 140 hours shot) not one complaint or problem with the EX-3. The entire 20 weeks worth of shooting was shot hand held with the help of a “over the shoulder” brace from Olof Ekbergh Westside A V Studios. Needless to say I am glad it is over and will think twice before I do it again with only a few days lead time to produce a 1 hour show for 20 weeks. The treadmill of a weekly 1 hour show was grueling.
Keep the Ex-3

August 27, 2010 at 5:39 pm in reply to: Can EX-1 or EX-3 shoot fast moving objects with the “rolling shutter” issuesI have shot over 300 hours of high speed car racing over the past two years at night with both the ex-1 and ex-3. The cars are moving at over 100 mph and the light (which is very low) changes every 10 or 15 feet or so. Because of the fast moving cars and the changing light we operate auto iris and the ex cameras keep up without a problem. The footage is aired on 4 TV stations in my state. We shoot 1920x1080i and the end result for the TV stations is SD 4×3 DVCAM tape. The show is 1 hour long and we are in our 20th show for this season. There are times when I am running as much as 9db of gain and the iris is at 1.9 and I still get amazing results under the most extreme circumstances. As of this date the Ex cameras have never let me down and we are considering buying two more. One more EX-1R and a EX320. The rolling shutter has not been a problem when the still camera guys are shooting the post race interview. Once or twice in the past two seasons I have seen the banding on a frame when the still camera went off right next to me. I just inserted a white frame over this frame the effect was not a problem.
When Sony came out with the EX series the hit a home run in my estimation.
My only complaint is the off on switch on both cameras and the fact that there is not a station in my state that can originate HD programing. I was so disappointed when I visited some of the stations and saw their infrastructure. I hate to see my HD footage down converted to SD.

What about the new EX-1 R is there a firmware up date for it or will it work with the 32 gig cards right out of the box?
Thanks

I have the shoulder mount by Olof for my Ex-3 and it is outstanding in every respect. I didn’t know Olof made one for the EX-1. In the near future I plan to purchase a EX-1R as a second camera and if Olof has one for the Ex-1R I will surely order it also.

Here at Kato Video Productions we produce a dirt racing show weekly now that airs on 4 TV stations with an EX-3,Ex-1 and a couple of incar cameras and complete our multicam edit in Grassvalley/Edius. We do not have a production truck or a switcher…. Gorilla video style but it works for us.
Good luck

I have shot extensively with both the EX-1 and the Ex-3. Both are outstanding cameras. The only thing I found different with the EX-3 was the ergonomics which still needs some improvement. Also the Ex-3 is more easilly studio configured because of the additonal out puts and the ability to use other lenses. The Ex-1 or now the EX-1r is much easier to travel with because it will fit into a smaller bag that will fit easilly in the overhead of an airplane. Also the view finder is not as apt to be damaged in transit.
Great Cameras

I really think that the EX series gives the professional videographer the most bang for the buck. Sony really hit a home run with the EX camera line…. My only complaint is the off on switch on the Ex-1 and Ex-3. I just wish that it was easier to find and feel in the dark. The paint if coming off all around the switch where my finger nail scratches it. I make it a habit of taking off the battery on all my cameras when putting them in the bag to keep from having it on by mistake while in the bag.

What I was trying to say was:
I was at NAB and it appeared that the 320 was very similar to the 350 except for the 1/2 inch chips. when I looked at them side by side it was hard to tell the difference except for the larger diameter lens.
I don’t think that the demo 320 will be useful as “B” stock because it has so much drool on it.
My laptop has a mind of its own sometimes and it posted the message before I was finished.
Sorry folks.Anyway it appears to be a real good product for Sony. I thought that they would have come out with it before the 350.
I have the EX-3 now and I am about to purchase the EX-1 R as a second camera.
BTW How do I delete the first post?
