PMW-320K camera
Posted by Dave Fleming on June 22, 2010 at 5:32 pmDoes anyone have some info on the PMW-320K XDCAM EX shoulder mount? I hear it was introduced at NAB. I’ve read through a .pdf already, I’m looking more for information on when they’d be shipping. Also, do you know if the lens they are packaging with the camera is any good? Thanks!

June 23, 2010 at 10:01 pmIll was at NAB and it appeared that the 320 was very similar to the 350 except for the 1/2 inch chips. when I looked at them side by side it was hard to tell the difference except for the larger diameter lens.
I don’t think that the demo 320 will be useful as “B

I don’t think that the demo 320 will be useful as “B” stock because it has so much drool on it.
My laptop has a mind of its own sometimes and it posted the message before I was finished.
Sorry folks.Anyway it appears to be a real good product for Sony. I thought that they would have come out with it before the 350.
I have the EX-3 now and I am about to purchase the EX-1 R as a second camera.
BTW How do I delete the first post?

June 27, 2010 at 10:57 pmI had a demo 350 for about 5 days, and didn’t like it. Pretty images for sure, but no 1080P recording, and recording bit rate is 35 mbps.
Biggest problem was with the big-ass color view-finder. Couldn’t fit my hand between the VF and lens. The whole camera seemed to be a bit on the “gimmicky” side. To each his own though.Patrick

June 27, 2010 at 11:41 pmShoots 1080p24 1080p25 1080p30 if it’s like al the other XDCAM EX cameras.
35mbps GOP is extremely efficient. You’d often need more than triple that for some iFrame codecs to match the quality. Just add nanoFlash for bit rates over 200mbps as HD-SDI out feeding the nanoFlash is uncompressed 422. It’s sound like you may not fully understand the technology. You’re not going to find much competitive to this in this price range. -

June 28, 2010 at 12:27 amI really think that the EX series gives the professional videographer the most bang for the buck. Sony really hit a home run with the EX camera line…. My only complaint is the off on switch on the Ex-1 and Ex-3. I just wish that it was easier to find and feel in the dark. The paint if coming off all around the switch where my finger nail scratches it. I make it a habit of taking off the battery on all my cameras when putting them in the bag to keep from having it on by mistake while in the bag.

November 1, 2010 at 9:26 pmWe just received delivery on the PMW 320 and it really appears to be an awesome camera.
After looking at the stock lens, it should be easy for someone to come out with a focus block for conventional mechanical remote focus control for this lens.
One problem I noticed is that it has only one shoe for accessories. The supplied shoe is on the front. The manual states that a rear shoe kit is available for an external monitor. I have searched and searched without finding any info on the rear shoe.
Since I already have a sony wireless receiver I will need to use the front kit for the wireless and need a rear shoe for the monitor.
Anybody have info on the rear shoe kit?
Thanks

November 18, 2010 at 8:59 pmThe rear shoe problem solved… I received this week a “rear shoe” kit from my dealer (Dennis Hopkins) at Armatoes in NY and itworks like a champ. It is more robust of heavy duty than the stock front shoe and will handle an external monitor with ease.
Also I have looked carefully at the standard focus block by Verizoom for the stock lens. I am not sure but it appears to be the same size and configuration as the normal Fuginon lenses. I called varizoom and they did not know if it would fit or not. Anyway it appears to me that the aftermarket companies are missing the chance to develop accessories for this very popular camera.

November 18, 2010 at 9:24 pmI bought my EX1 from Armato’s and Dennis. Absolutely stellar mom and pop dealer with personal customer service the “big” places can’t match.

November 19, 2010 at 10:44 amI have been buying and trading cameras with Dennis at Armatos for the past 10 years or so and their service after the sale is outstanding. On the very first camera I purchased from Dennis (Sony DSR 500) I experienced a camera failure right in the middle of the first shoot. It was
on a Saturday afternoon and I had another job in New
Orleans on the following Tuesday. Dennis sent me
another camera body UPS overnight delivery and I
received it Monday afternoon. That was about 10 years
ago and I have been a loyal customer since.Sent from my Iphone with much difficulty

November 19, 2010 at 3:21 pmYes, Armato’s loaner policy can’t be beat. It’s not even a service contract deal, it’s simply their policy to offer a loaner camera if the camera you buy from them has a problem. To me that’s a big deal because,if you’re a small business professional, the single biggest cost of repair is often the down time. Down time can cost you thousands if a camera is out for a week. It can easily outstrip the cost of repair. Armato’s is a Sony authorized repair shop as well (although Sony wont do that for the EX series).
