Many years ago I was looking for a stable reliable editing software program . I tried most of the ones mentioned here and found Canopus which finally became edius (grassvalley) and never looked back. It ingests Video from the Sony SXS cards with ease. Like most all editing software it is all in knowing where to “click”. It is logical and easy to use and fast. Many TV stations and TV networks use Edius in news gathering. There are many tutorials available on you tube
and help on the edius forum ( https://forum.grassvalley.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7). You can even down load a trial version to take a look at the edius program. I have three Sony Xdcam cameras EX1R, EX-3 and a PMW 320.
Also I have an Sony reader that I use to import the footage from the SXS cards. You can also import your footage direct from the Sony Xdcam cameras. For Me this setup works like a charm. The only thing I dislike about the Sony products is the price of the SXS cards. However I have never had a capture failure with the Sony cards. Several years ago I had a 20 week TV show on automobile dirt racing. The time between shooting the footage
and delivery to four TV stations (one hour program) was 4 days. I could have never made it without the reliability of the Sony cameras, SXS cards and the Edius software.

Thanks for your post Michael. All of my cards with the exception of one are “PRO” cards. I have one SXS -1 32 gig card. I think that when it gets new the end of it’s life that there is some warning. Not sure about the SXS “PRO” cards. I see a lot of the used cards on e-bay and other sites lately and I am tempted. In the past I have used a cople of the Hoodman 32 gig cards without a problem. However, not on paying Jobs.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Tom I have been looking for the same thing. I really want a “clip on” Matte box with out the added weight of the
rails. I shot an interview a few months ago with my PMW 320 and after looking at the clip I saw a spot right on the neck of the person I was interviewing. At first I thought it was something going on with my lens. Especially when at the next interview I shot at a different location I had the same thing. I almost sent my lens off to Sony for evaluation and or repair and discovered at the second shoot it was a lens flare. I was shooting at both interviews inside and was using my light kit and when I moved one of the lights it went away.

What I really need is a reasonably priced matte box with a “flag” on the top. I really would like to have one with three flags. One on top and then on the two sides. Some of the Matte boxes are really expensive. I really don’t need the filters and the rails.

Make sure all the cameras are EX-1 cameras and not a mixture of EX-1R and ex-1 cameras. The latest firmware is different. The ex-1R cameras will more than likely work with the large cards if the firmware is up to date.

I would check each camera with the card that you are going to use on the shoot and to see if the camera will read and write to that particular card.

I had my PMW 320 which uses the same card as the EX cameras to go down when it switched slots to a large card because of the firmware update was not current. One other thing, (just to be sure that the cards have reliability) I would make sure that they are all the “pro” cards rather than a mixture of SXS-1 the SXS pro cards.

Best option is the look at the firmware versions of each camera and call Sony service in NJ.

    Hope this helps.

Sorry Ken that I couldn’t help. I am not really sure where you are but best to call Sony support. I have always had great results with problems for my Sony cameras. Just recently I was able to update all my cameras to the latest firmware version with the help of Sony support.

    Try this link: https://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=CONTACT

I don’t know about your camera but in the Ex-1R, the Ex-3 and the PMW 320 there is an option in the menu to trigger the external recorder, the SXS cards or both. Having to have a SXS card sort of defeats the advantage of shooting long term projects with an external recorder. I was thinking about one of the Atomos products but decided instead to update my firmware in all three cameras and purchase some additional SXS cards and not have to worry about running out of space on the smaller SXS cards. I just didn’t look forward to having another “dongle” to add to my camera.

Hope you get it to work..

November 19, 2014 at 2:07 pm in reply to: Atomos ninja blade and the Sony ex-3,ex-1-r, pmw 320

Thanks Jim for your reply… I would like to be able to use the Atomos recorder in a hand held situation rather than on a tripod. Having to use the record button on the Ninja would make it cumbersome. In the case of the PMW 320 it would always be on a tripod. The ex1-r would most always be hand held so I guess that lets me out of the market for the Atomos products. Since all three of my cameras have SDI out I wonder if the same is true with the Samurai blade? I guess you have already answered my question because all three cameras probably are set up the same way. I sure wish it would work. This would breathe new life into my cameras. I am not in the position to upgrade my cameras now or in the future. The cost of the SXS cards are so expensive and I have had mixed results with aftermarket SXS cards. On my last big project I had an aftermarket card to fail and I lost some important footage before I realized it. What I have been doing is using the aftermarket cards in the first slot and if one were to fail just hit the card switch button and only loose a few seconds of the footage. If I do it the other way (SXS in first slot) and the card runs out the second card some times will not start. Unless you are watching carefully you want notice it for several minutes and then you have to swap cards quickly to avoid loosing more of your shot.

    Thanks again….

Thanks for your reply. I wonder if the record button on my sony cameras will start and stop the samurai blade? Also will it record on both the XSX cards and the Samurai at the same time? What happens if your cards run out can you keep recording on the Samurai?

    Thanks

September 19, 2014 at 10:52 pm in reply to: Better Lens for the Sony EX-3

Thanks Bill for the info on the adaptor. I have the original box that the ex-3 came in and I am sure it is in there. My Ex-3 is setup with a modified over the shoulder brace that allows me to use a large Sony “V mount” battery. For several years I used the ex3 as the main camera for a Dirt Racing Video TV program that aired on 4 stations in Mississippi. That camera along with the Ex-1r are work horses and the extra 2x in the lens would sure have helped. I just didn’t realize the lens on the PMW 320 wouuld fit the Ex-3. Now that I am looking at one of the Atomos Ninja products the larger lens and the Ninja will breaathe new life into the EX-3.

    Take care

September 18, 2014 at 10:27 pm in reply to: Better Lens for the Sony EX-3

Hello Bill: I have both the PMW 320 and the Ex-3. No trouble with the stock lens on the ex-3 here. However, what you are telling me is that the lens on the pmw 320 (which is a 16x) will fit on the ex-3 with an adaptor.
Where did you find the adaptor and how expensive was it?

    Thanks
