  • Better Lens for the Sony EX-3

    hello all….

Well, I have found a solution for the Sony EX-3 lens “creeping” problem….I got on a eBay.com last week and brought a Fujinon XS 16×5.8A-XB-8 hot shoe 1/2″ lens and it came in the mail today…..And for the last 3 hours , I have been playing with it on my EX-3, with the ACM-18 adapter….and the lens performs better that I expected.

The lens in question is the stock lens made for the PMW-320K XDCAM ex camera, it is a little bit front heavy, but not that bad….the camera does talk to the lens as it will do the in menu back focus and it makes my EX-3 look more professional.

I would like to thank the people at Sony XDCAM support and Ian Cook’s group for their help in this matter when I spoke to them on Monday.

So, I just want to pass this on, to other Sony EX-3 owner’s and also to PMW-300K1 buyers…as this set up will work on those cameras as well.

Hello Bill: I have both the PMW 320 and the Ex-3. No trouble with the stock lens on the ex-3 here. However, what you are telling me is that the lens on the pmw 320 (which is a 16x) will fit on the ex-3 with an adaptor.
Where did you find the adaptor and how expensive was it?

    Thanks

    Ronnie

    Hello Ronnie,

The ACM-18 adapter came with the Sony EX-3 when I got the camera back in 2010….
you should have one, if you own a EX-3. If not I see them on eBay.com going for anywhere from $100.00 up to $700.00 (some people, get real)…..I am sure you can call Sony support and they will give you the part number, but knowing Sony….it will not be cheap.

    I hope this helps…..

Thanks Bill for the info on the adaptor. I have the original box that the ex-3 came in and I am sure it is in there. My Ex-3 is setup with a modified over the shoulder brace that allows me to use a large Sony “V mount” battery. For several years I used the ex3 as the main camera for a Dirt Racing Video TV program that aired on 4 stations in Mississippi. That camera along with the Ex-1r are work horses and the extra 2x in the lens would sure have helped. I just didn’t realize the lens on the PMW 320 wouuld fit the Ex-3. Now that I am looking at one of the Atomos Ninja products the larger lens and the Ninja will breaathe new life into the EX-3.

    Take care

    Ronnie

For Atomos…you will need the Samurai as it has the HD/SDI input that the EX-3 has….I hope to get one around Christmas time…..then I will be complete and thats it for gear this year…….
