July 18, 2014 at 10:18 pm in reply to: latest firware updates for Ex-1R, Ex-3, PMW320

Thanks so much guys…. All three of my cameras are performing solid.
I just want to be sure that I can use the new 32/64 gig SXS-1 cards.

    Current firmware :
    Ex-1R 1.10
    EX-3 1.15
    PMW 320 1.01

One other question: Where do I go to get the instructions on how to perform the updates?

Anxious here !!! I have read so many horror stories… I sure don’t want to take a chance on screwing up.

    Thanks

  • Hello Tom: On deciding which camera to buy, I have usually have tried to stay at the leading edge not the bleeding edge. Also, my decision depends on how I am going to distribute my project. I think 4k will come, but for the life of me, I don’t believe that for my projects my clients I will need 4K for awhile. I am so surprised that even DVD distribution is still alive and well. It pains me to see the pristine video I have shot in 1920×1080 go down to 720×480 for DVD distribution. If you think the 4k will be the method of distribution for your projects then them by all means go ahead with the 4K camera. Blu Ray has not made the market penetration that I thought it would by this time. I can remember going to HDV with two new cameras and then almost immediately going to HD with my camera arsenal. We are shooting with The EX-3, Ex1-R and a PMW 320. All three of these cameras match close enough that in post I can match them even better.

My plans are to wait until Sony and others see enough market for 4k to start making a lot more choices in cameras and camera types.

    Good luck

Sorry Rick that you are having problems. Your dilemma is the reason why I only use the Sony SXS cards either the pro version or the less expensive version. I have never had a problem with the Sony cards and I have shot many hours with four of the EX cameras. I did buy some Hoodman after market cards and they have been reliable. However, I never shoot on a paying gig with the after market cards.

One thing that you have to remember with the new cameras that shoot on a card is that you cannot cut off (power down )the camera or remove the card until the camera has completely written the file to the card. I noticed early on when I switched from a tape (HDV) camera was that after I stopped shooting there were a few frames written of my foot or something else that was blurred after I pressed the stop button. I would have to go back and cut off the end of each clip. After I discovered that it was pilot error on my part, I would hold the camera in position for a few seconds after stopping clip.

I have no clue as how to recover your corrupted clips. Hopefully someone on the forum will have an answer for you. Good luck,

    Ronnie

I forgot to ask what Picture profile you were using. To keep my cameras as close as possible I have them all set to Doug Jensen’s Profile Doug 1. If you do not have his tutorial on the Ex-1r it would be a good investment.

I hope by now you have it narrowed down on what is causing your problem with green screen.

    Good Luck

Sorry if I hit a nerve with my response to your request for advice on your problems with green screen shots. In the future if I see you asking for advice I will surely not offer my help.

It is just my experience that many times when I am having a problem with something I go back to the basics and find that it was pilot error on my part. If I have all the basics in order then I proceed to each facet of the problem at hand.

Perhaps I am not as proficient or experienced as you and others on the forum. I have been at this for a long time.

I was just trying to help….

Hope you find the answer to you problem.

    Take care

I have shot many green screens with the Ex-1, ex-1R, Ex-3 and PMW 320 which are basically the same cameras with no problems at all.

Most of the time when I see a bad green screen shot is when the subject and the green screen ware not lighted correctly.

Also, there are somne editing platforms that do not have optimum keyers.

My Editing platform has been for years Grass Valley Edius (curently 7.21). You did not state your editing software.

Bottom line is that there may be more than one problem with your green screen shots.

Be sure to review your lighting techinques before blaming the camera.

    Hope this helps

January 2, 2014 at 8:12 pm in reply to: Holding the EX1 against chest

I have shot several hundred hours with both the EX-1 and the Ex-1R.
What I have found is that if the Hoodman eye piece is used on the fold out view finder and if you use the large battery (either Sony or Switt) and rest it on your colar bone or chest, you can have very stable and confortable shooting with the Ex-1. I cock the grip on my right hand up just click up from horizontal and place my left hand under the lens hood with my index finger around the little foot at the bottom. This allows my thumb to operate the manual focus easily. There have been times that I have shot constantly for 3-4 hours when shooting dirt automobile racing. The only thing that really gets tired from this position is the small of my back.

I also have the Ex-3 that is configured with a brace that allows a large Battery to be placed as a counter weight over my shoulder. The standard view fnder on the Ex-3 is much like using the Hoodman on the Ex-1. You actually have 4 points of support. Your right hand on the grip to operate the zoom and the take button, the contact with your colar bone or chest, your eye in the view finder and your left hand on the lens hood.

It also helps to glue a piece of foam on the back of the large battery as a cushion for your chest.

    Hope this helps

Make sure that white balance is not on Auto. I was shooting an automobile race one evening and did not realize the white balance was on auto. There was a flagstand that would come into view every time the cars came around the track and it was bright white. As a result, the color temperature would change on every lap.

    Good Luck

Sometimes it is the simple things that give us a problem. Be sure to check and see if the dark camera has a ND filter on.

    Good Luck

Your back focus is off. Go to the manual and look for back focus adjustment procedure and you will see how to correct it. Also if you google back focus for Ex-1 you will see videos there on how to adjust back focus on the Ex-1.

    Hope this helps
