Because we’re on Avid Xpress Pro for this project. We’ve got an FCP suite, too, but this project is being cut all Xpress Pro (which can’t import via FAM mode)

Excellent article, Tim! Thanks for taking the time to do this.

One quick question about the ProRes quarter-res/Medium Quality:

If one edits at this resolution, what would be the workflow for archiving or mastering if you wanted to use a higher quality? Would you capture everything again, then transcode it to the higher ProRes quality (unless you have a machine fast enough to do transcode it on the fly)?

[walter biscardi] “If I was editing, it would definitely be the 17″”

Walter, I’m curious to know, wouldn’t everything on the screen be that much more ‘crammed’ in, then? Sure you could see more, but it would be so tiny.

Are you saying you’d get the bigger size screen b/c of Final Cut Pro screen layout, or for opening HD files full-screen?

Just curious, b/c I’m thinking of getting a MacBook Pro in the near future.

Thanks to both for your help!

Ended up going HD-SDI from deck to deck to make the dubs. Couldn’t find any other way to alter the existing TC.

Just a note to anyone interested: when I went to test one of the new discs, the Sony XDCAM software (on Mac OSX) seemed to stall when it came time to import my subclips. I waited and waited and finally after about 15 minutes it worked. My guess is that since the new dub is one huge clip, it took much longer to scan/read the source before importing.

    Thanks again.

Compressor most definitely shifts the Gamma (which makes the colours look washed out) when encoding MPEG-2. This has been mentioned many times in the DVDSP forum. Not sure of exact reason why, but it definitely does. I compensate with gamma and contrast adjustments in Compressor.

[Borjis] “They clearly want everyone on the intel architecture now.”

Well, they want everyone on *new* computers. Can’t blame them for that.

Wow, I didn’t realize the full XDCAM quality is only 35 Mbits (!!!)

I just grabbed some footage last night and was amazed that the file sizes are only slightly larger than DV25. Amazing.

Wonder how it holds up in colour correcting.

I see now that open GOP’s are preferable UNLESS:

    – you are authoring a multi-angle DVD, or…

    – the MPEG will need to be edited

Closed GOP’s are basically self-contained packs of frames, from what I understand.

How does this affect player compatibility, though? These things worry me if I’m having run of 1000 DVD’s made up.

    Thanks for the info!

I’m guessing (from what I could understand) it’s just a matter of highlighting all those clips, then Remove Attributes > Distort.
