Do you guys mind elaborating on this process briefly? Does FCP have a setup for importing XDCAM low-res via firewire? How does the low-res look?

[David Roth Weiss] “Its pretty exciting for all of us I think.”

Incredibly exciting. I’d say it’s a good thing to have Apple on your side. ;O)

And with Color only supporting 2K, there’s really no way to finish at 4K using FCS2.”

Ah, I see! Thanks for that.

[Danrnw] “Set your GOP for 7 (the lower number)”

Hmm, that’s funny. I’ve had no problems whatsoever with pans, etc, and blockiness. What I *have* had problems with is the well-documented gamma shift.

I’ll have to try the GOP setting for experiment’s sake. Then again, why fix what ain’t broke?

Chances are you’re seeing the blockiness b/c the gamma has shifted. Try a 1.1 or 1.2 gamma.

I’ve noticed this, too, but I think it’s more an FCP problem than the tablet. Sometimes, even when using the mouse, I accidentally move a clip I’m trying to select.

[bbalser] “Second, and for me this was MAJOR serious, everything in your Favorites bin in the Effects tab of the Browser will vanish. Again, FCP Rescue will not restore them. I had a HUGE collection I’d built up over the last few years, now it’s all down the toilet. So be aware you will lose all of that with the upgrade.”

I thought this happens anytime pref’s are replaced? I do what Walter says: keep them in a project file.

[Michael G] “Very misleading title Harry. It should have read “Failure to use Media Manager Disaster””

So true! Media Manager would’ve averted disaster. I’ve been using it for years without a problem, in very complicated situations. Yet I continue to see posts about alleged Media Manager disasters. User disasters would be more accurate. ;O)

[Chris Poisson] “After all this BS about operationg systems, I traced the problem to a bad LaCie power supply. A good thing to check next time you think a drive has died or is dying.”

That was my first thought. Either bad power supply or WRONG power supply. I had a friend with multiple LaCie drives (and all the stupid wallwarts that go with them) and he mixed up the wallwarts (because they all look exactly the same) and used one that goes with a 120 GB with a 500 GB and the exact same thing happened: the light just kept blinking and would not mount.

I only buy external drives with built-in power supplies now. Can’t stand all those bricks all over the place.

[scotts1919] “2 of them actually started smoking when hooked up to mac systems.”

Sounds like you put your FireWire cable in upside-down. It fries the board.

This is the number one reason for dead firewire drives (that people blame on the drive, of course)
