I really do like to keep things snugly screwed down, for obvious reasons. But I’ve had more than experience like this and I’ve had a couple of cards live out their lives successfully with just one screw holding them in place. As you indicated, the question of whether you’ll be plugging and unplugging directly into the card is important. If everything is working and you can keep from jiggling it too much I wouldn’t worry about it.

I shouldn’t write anything here after reading Zelin’s classic response. So true. But I’ll add one thing to the suggestion of using Firewire via and a Panasonic 1400 deck. When I rent that deck I pay $350/day. (And I’m using it, by the way, with a Kona 3 card; not with Firewire.) I think most rental houses around here charge even more than that for a day’s rental. At those prices, it’s not long before you’ve paid for a Kona 3 card.

I followed Bob Zelin’s advice when I was setting up my system and went with RAID 5. As he indicated above, everything has gone swimmingly ever since; no problems.
That being said, before there was a RAID 5 I used to work with RAID 0 arrays. Frankly, never had a problem with them either.
But I really like the safety of RAID 5.

After having had an unfortunate experience when learning how FCP shifts the timeline downstream from the target clip on a speed change, I decided to start copying the target clip and pasting at the end of my sequence before changing the speed. That should work as well as starting up another sequence to do that job, shouldn’t it? (I’m not in my studio to test this out…)

Hi David,
These are utility Firewire drives I’m working with for backup, storage, etc. I’ve already spent plenty of money on my MaxxDigital 6 TB RAID 5 array. Lemme keep a couple Firewire 800s!

Thanks very much, Russ. I don’t have much experience with daisy-chained Firewire drives so my inclination was to buy an expansion card. I appreciate your advice on that.

I know. My typo. I think the word “Express” and I write an “X.” Recognizing that error, does anyone have any advice on my questions?
Thanks.

Do you have a transcript of the interview? Perhaps you can find a point at which the interviewee said the same word that was interrupted by the bang and then just replace the audio of that word. Hopefully you can find more than one instance of that word being spoken at another time because intonation, volume, etc. will determine whether other iterations of the same word will sound good enough as a replacement. But I have done this several times successfully..

Thanks for sharing your painful experience, Walter. I’ll bet Red Giant has a different approach to upgrades now. Or at least I would hope they’re listening to your experience.

Well, whaddya know? I didn’t even install it after I realized my mistake. I called Red Giant at that time and they said to wait for a Leopard update but it’s been a few months and no further word.
I guess maybe I’ll give it a try. Although I am surprised by your comment, Walter You were very positive about Colorista months ago. Why don’t you use it much any more? Something I should be wary of? (I guess I’d better buy that DVD of yours, eh?!)
Thanks for the responses, folks.
