thanks bear, that made sense and was one of the workarounds i was using. it still seems like slightly weird default behaviour to lose the ease when you update/record a new position at a keyframe. i’m not sure when that default behaviour is actually useful, it would seem a more useful default behaviour that when you move the object to the new position it didn’t reset the whole path but would keep and adjust the curve at the new position. anyway now i understand how it works and will make use of adam’s time track suggestion.

thanks heaps adam. that’s great. silly me, coming from after effects i didn’t realize you could assign a time curve totally separate from the ease on keyframes like that. with your suggestion i looked time track up and found it on page 860 of the manual and figured it out. really nice feature i didn’t know about and will use from now on. just wondering, aside from that eye opener, if you weren’t using a time track, is there a way to update/record a postion keyframe without losing an ease that you have already set up. thanks again.

that’s not what i get with parallel spots on an opaque plane. unless the material in the plane is transparent there is no light shining through the plane. do you see this in renders or just the preview gouraud mode? in the preview mode you see the light shining through to objects behind but it renders properly. maybe check the material settings?

maybe just pre-compose the layers (mac command-shift-c, puts all the layers you want reversed into one new layer) and then change the time/duration of the new layer to -100%. (negative 100%). then just use it as one reversed clip on the timeline.

that does help. i’ll investigate further. thanks curtis.

SHOOT IT! (what happened to the “very, very basic” look in your first post?) you’ll spend days and days (weeks?) trying to do it in 3d when you could get an old typewriter that you can take apart, a good camera guy with a variety of lenses & lights and be done in a day. do a good tight edit of your shots and add atmospherics, blurs & colorizing in afx, you’re done, probably would look better than a 3d learning project.

Xport the swf from quicktime pro as a quicktime movie, pick your codec, and then import to afx, should work for you.

mylenium approach is closest to the look i was going for, more complicated than what i remembered doing but much better look. the shatter extrude is also a good trick. thanks all.

“I love After Effects and can’t recall the last time I had an issue with sound while in it.”
yikes! are you kidding me? i love after effects too (and i do a lot of audio in logic etc), but i always have an issue with audio and the way it’s implemented in afx. it sounds fine, but the difficulty of previewing any real-time audio with pic in after effects is really a massive time-waster and having to render and rerender and rerender the same audio every time you roll a preview (even when nothing is changed) adds a fair amount of dead time to every project. (who doesn’t work with audio in after effects at this point in the game?) it’s not very well worked out, extremely slow and is on the top of my wish list for afx changes or fixes.

March 12, 2006 at 12:00 am in reply to: making video into a cartoon – coming soon….to me the schwab commercials are idiotic and kind of creepy. you have to wonder what they think the graphic metaphor means. they seem to be saying the cusomers (you and me) are just cut-out cartoonish characters without a lick of humour or irony. seems like another example of a some art director who had seen “waking life” and who thought it would be a way to sell stuff to gen-X consumers who had also seen linklater’s film and would somehow say to themselves, “oh schwab is so cool, they saw “waking life” too. i’ll sign up.” the medium is wildly off key from the message of the spots, a little like the stuck-record-buy-it-by-the-yard-rave tracks under the baby food commercial or shine all over the ‘roids medication spots. as to whether the commericals are succesful or have “major attention” because they’re “different”, i wonder, really are they? just ‘cuz we’re talking about them on a technical forum doesn’t mean the rest of the world even notices or that schwab’s bottom line has ticked up because of them. i think they’re just bad (but expensive) advertising. the style is mechanical, co-opted and ripped-off, totally without charm or appeal to even the people they thought it would attract.
