several versions ago with afx i remember doing an effect where a piece of type or graphic element could be offset or extruded in a given direction and to any distance. imagine kind of animating a solid hunk of color at a 60 degree angle that draws on or off from the type shape itself. i remember being able to keyframe the angle and the amount of the extrude to go offscreen and to change angle. i can’t figure out how to do this now but i thought it was an afx plug that did it. kind of a solid drop shado extrude that draws on. any ideas or am i imagining this?

Is this what you were thinking of?

Another way to get an actual 3D extrusion and be able to use a comp camera is with the shatter effect. It is somewhat crude but depending on the font and how much you want to extrude it can work. The key is to make sure the shatter force has no impact on the layer whatsoever; create a custom shatter map using your text; In the effect parameters select render pieces only. Set the extrusion depth to whatever you require but smaller numbers work best. Set other parameters as needed. That’s it in a nutshell, if memory serves.

mylenium approach is closest to the look i was going for, more complicated than what i remembered doing but much better look. the shatter extrude is also a good trick. thanks all.
