  • mocha will certainly do an excellent job for screen inserts such as these. However, the issue is that each screen is on a separate plane. This requires you to track each screen separately. With a 3D track, you will only need to solve the scene ONCE.

If you’re using AE’s 3D Camera Tracker, ensure that you first mask out the foreground occlusion in a precomp prior to tracking as it will very likely interfere, negatively, with the tracking algorithm’s requirements for a good track.

  • It’s best to use the Warp Stabilizer at the very start of your workflow. Then ensure that you render out the comp before proceeding with the rest of your workflow.

    1) Fast CPU = Good
    2) More, Fast CPU Cores = Better

A minimum of 2GB per fast CPU core is an ideal starting point for a well-balanced AE workstation with respect to these options. Add fast harddisks, at least one for each of your cache, storage and render drives and you will have a well-balanced and optimized AE workstation.

Use the CTRL+\ shortcut key combo to maximize a floating frame in AE.

October 18, 2013 at 6:51 pm in reply to: Camera tracking data

The 3D tracking data is stored as part of the AEP. BTW, The 3D Camera Track data uses the same engine as the Warp Stabilizer. You will notice the size of your AEP gets much larger with each instance of the aforementioned features.

[justin avery] “A client is wondering whether their AE guys can use our tracking data – were we to save it off – to add further gfx in post”

What you will need to do is to add the 3rd party tracking data into an AE camera. You don’t need AE’s tracking engine for this. You may want to look at mamoworld’s Orient World script – https://mamoworld.com/tools/orient-world as a helper tool after the external tracking data has been placed onto an AE camera. The trick is to get the tracking data to be compatible with AE’s data requirements.

You may want to hire Dan Ebbert’s pro help to develop a custom script that streamlines the process and ensures that it works.

  • Excellent solution Walter. The only thing I’d do different is to use an empty Comp instead of the PSD/PNG.

Ted, why not just set the Channel drop menu in Levels to the Alpha?

  • If you have CS6/CC, you can SHIFT+Parent to move the second layer towards the center of the first layer. This assumes that the Anchor Point of the second layer is at its center.

Alternatively, you use Snap feature in CS6/CC to move the first layer to the second layer’s center.

If you feel confident with replacing something on the trailer with mocha then the workflow and technical requirements to replace the puddles on the ground are actually identical. I suggest that you give it a try.
