Use proxies. You can’t go wrong. You’ll still need to render with the high rez images come deadline time but proxies are the way to go when you’re building your comps and doing test renders.

The technique involves splitting (CTRL+SHIFT+D) the 3D stroke layer and then moving the duplicate so that one is on top of the subject and the other layer is below. Repeat the stps as many times as is required.

A bit of a workaround –
1) create a comp and drop your backplate there.
2) drop another layer or a solid (depending on what you’re doing) on top of the backplate layer.
3) set the transparency of the backplate to approx. 50%
4) nest this comp into another comp and start painting
5) when you’re done painting, goto the precomp and switch off the backplate layer.

There are Intel legacy CODECs are cross platform. But ver 5.0 isn’t one of those. The Indeo CODECs are now supported by Ligos. And Indeo CODECs were developed for CD-ROM and HD delivery of postage-sized videos. Definitely not ideal for broadcast work.

Ensure that you have the latest OpenGL drives for your graphics card. If you do and things still foul up then make do with fewer of the OpenGL options in AE. If all else fails, then goto your desktop and set the settings for your grpahics card to not have Hardware Acceleration. This is normally switched on.

These pieces of info relate to the audio encoding. There is nothing mentioned about the video CODEC. Import the file into AE. In the Project Window, select the file and press one of the modifier keys, CTRL, ALT, CTRL. Sorry but I can’t recall the exact key combo. Once you’ve hit the jackpot, you’ll get some info on the four-character (not the foul word) code for the CODEC. That should give you a better idea.
