  • Paint Layer as a Separate Layer

Posted by Alex Kuzelicki on September 4, 2006 at 2:07 am

    Hi,

Please forgive this basic question but I’m trying to make a separate layer that I can paint on, over the top of a composition.

I want to keep it separate so I can swap it around, put masks over it, etc.

I’m guessing this is pretty easy but I haven’t come up with the solution yet. Some help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks kindly,

    ALEX

Will an adjustment layer work for your situation?

    Hi Andrew,

I tried an Adjustment Layer and I can use it to make masks but not to paint directly on. The paint tools won’t seem to let me get at it. I’m probably missing something obvious.

Just say I wanted to paint a word or shape freehand, I’d like to keep that on a separate layer (to the layer I’m painting over). Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks kindly for your help, so far.

PS – LOVE your Action Movie Essentials and other DVD’s. I’m a stunt performer (IMDB.com me for credits) and they will definitely come in handy for my own short films, etc. Would love a good tutorial on removing wires and rigs… on moving shots (not plate shots). Haven’t come across an AE one that doesn’t give that shimmering effect when the footage plays in real-time. You are the man to do it!!!

    A bit of a workaround –
    1) create a comp and drop your backplate there.
    2) drop another layer or a solid (depending on what you’re doing) on top of the backplate layer.
    3) set the transparency of the backplate to approx. 50%
    4) nest this comp into another comp and start painting
    5) when you’re done painting, goto the precomp and switch off the backplate layer.

For some reason I thought you were using vector paint. But Rork’s way is great, I’ve also exported a transparent png frame from an empty comp and made the png rgb+alpha. Basically import this as a still frame and it works like footage except it’s completly transparent.
